Howdy!

I recently managed to successfully graft both a Leatherman bit holder and blade exchanger into my Powerassist. I love the SOG pliers, (of course), as well as the fast blade deploy, but also appreciate the Surge's ability to extend the toolset by using external attachments. So now I've got pretty much my perfect multi.

I thought I'd ask if this had been done, or if anyone wanted pics. I searched (plus I've read through every post) but haven't seen too much about such a Frankensteinian creation.

Few more for detail. It closes fine, as you can see. (But it was a bear to GET it to close!)

Thanks. Took a lot of fitting and filing, and I got the Leatherman parts off the bay and had to pay a good percentage of the price of a used surge to get 'em...rarer than hen's teeth. But it came out ok.

That is awesome! Fine job, Phibes! :like:

That is pretty close to being perfect and would make a very serious work MT! :)

Very nice :like:

This is even more versatile, not to mention that it must have taken quite a bit more work, than my modest attempt at pimping a PAD...
Cheers!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. Very much appreciated.

@Dutch_Trader, I looked at your file mod, and it was pretty impressive in it's own right. While the metal this stuff is made of (440C?) files fairly well, drilling it is very difficult.

I took off a wee bit too much material at one point, and thought I'd drill a hole and tap it for an 0-80 screw, which I could then file to replace the missing metal. No way. I blunted or broke everything I tried.

Your managing to get a hole through it is quite a feat.

Thanks - I went at it with diamond-powder-coated burring tools on a Dremel. This worked, but very slowly...

:salute: Well done on the tools selection! Powerassist have always been my favourite Sog. In fact, is one of my favourite MT. Great pliers and assisted knife. Tools are so-so though.. U Sir had brought it to another level! Did the difference in pivot size of the blade exchanger pose any problems?

There was a Sog frankenmod some years ago. Someone modded a Sog pliers with the compound leverage system onto surge handles.

"Did the difference in pivot size of the blade exchanger pose any problems?"

I had to put in a bushing to reduce the hole to the size of the SOG pivot.

The other major issue was how the surge locking slot for the bit holder was too high. I had to file it further down to align it with the lock pin, but then it was too wide. I shimmed it by epoxying in a piece of thin brass stock.

Glad these are ironed out to make your mod work. Sounds tedious but I am sure it's definitely worth the time doing it.  :salute:

I worked on it for about three days, on and off. It was a bit of a project but considering the amount of use I expect to get out it,  it wasn't too bad.

I think of a multitool ideally as a sort of extension of my hand, allowing me greater strength and dexterity than just using my fingers. So I chose the Powerassist because of the precision of the needlenose grind and the compound leverage, for the fast draw of the blades, and now for the extra potential of the added tools. It has to be with me always and have the fastest access possible to serve as "part of my hand", so I tried different sheaths until I found one that lets me draw it quickly and smoothly (and without being too visible, so I don't look like a total dork or a hoodlum...even then I try to snap those wicked blades open out of sight so I don't weird out the public too much! ).

Now I'm trying to practice using it so it becomes second nature. Muscle memory and all that.
