Pioneer and Cadet Thickness
on: August 03, 2018, 08:32:42 AM
I am currently in the market for either a Vic Pioneer or Cadet. The only SAK I have right now is an 84mm Sportsman. I’m looking to carry this as a stand-alone for formal occasions and other scenarios when I can't carry my LM Wave and dedicated folder.

I really prefer the Pioneer’s awl and larger size, but I don’t know if the Cadet would be that much of a better choice because of the need to not have a pocket bulge.

If possible, can I get some pics comparing the thickness of the Cadet, Pioneer, and a 2 layer cellidor equivalent to a Sportsman to help me decide what to buy. Also, pics from different angles would be a great help  :)

I carry a Wenger SI and can say it is no big deal in the pocket. If you like that awl, like I do, it is worth it. If you use a pocket suspension clip, it practically disappears in your pocket.

I had a Cadet and sold it. While I loved having the nail file, I found I didn’t need it as much as if I needed the inline awl. I can use the awl or knife to do much of the file work but the file won’t do what an awl will do.

My opinion. Good luck!

So the cadet is a little bit thicker than the pioneer would be if you took off the alox handles of the pioneer.  :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Just buy one (or more) of each and EDC them for some days.

The Vic Alox SAKs are amazing!  The build quality is excellent and the tools are first rate! Since you have stated your preference and the only hesitation seems to be carrying it, I would suggest either a pocket suspension clip or a small belt pouch.

I don't have a Sportsman but do have Pioneers and Cadets and the Cadet has a decisive advantage when it comes to slipping in a pocket and forgetting it's there.  I am a huge fan of the inline awl and have several Pioneers of different colors. If I was considering which to carry, I would go with the tools I wanted and the model I preferred and then would figure out how to best carry it.

:D The best coparison of all. Its just even though it would only be an additional $30, I’ve got to prioritize what gets purchased first...... (although to me MT’s and SAK’s are priority #1  :D)

Defintely get a Cadet!  :tu:

The Cadet is a great little knife and is super-thin. When I wore a tie, I often carried a Cadet in a pocket because it just disappears. The Pioneer is bulky by comparison.

Other ideas: Executive or Ambassador.

But the Cadet is a great SAK to have when thin is desired.

I’m kind of at a dilemma... I pulled out the calipers, and the Pioneer is slightly thinner than my Sportsman. The Cadet is slightly thicker than the Sportsman liners.

I think I’ll go with the pioneer on a suspension clip, and pocket carry it when I want to go light. When carrying it for formal occasions, I’ll figure out a different method.

But the Cadet is super thin... Maybe I’ll buy the Pioneer, sell the Sportsman, and use the fundage for a Cadet. Like a true MTo member, I shall get both  :D

Badger,

Are you old enough to remember Sugar Ray Leonard?

The Cadet is the Sugar Ray Leonard of SAK's: no weight, all punch.

If you do not need the openers and the awl, you could slim down to a Solo?

No, I’d like the features of the two layers. Thanks for the idea, though :tu:

In my humble () opinion, the pioneer is the greatest pocket knife ever made.

That being said, it really comes down to what is more useful to you? Thinness vs comfort in use? Awl vs nail file?

Also one thing I found after edcing a cadet for about two years and then switching to the pioneer is that I prefer the equal end pattern of the pioneer for both looks and comfort.

Both knives are high quality, and my preferences aside, there isn't a right answer besides what's best for you

The Cadet is great, but you might want to consider the alox Bantam.
