G-10 Scales, now that's INTERESTING..
on: January 31, 2017, 10:43:30 PM
Amici,
It looks like SB has gone ahead and had manufactured scales made from G-10, something that has been tossed around a bit for a few years as a possible replacement to the Cellidor scales. I took these images from the bay, and despite the fact that they do seem quite nice, it looks like these won't be of the simply snap and tap on variety.

If anything, these look like a continuation of the glue and press types, and I refuse to glue any sort of scale onto the frames of my SAK, no matter how cool or durable looking they may be.

By the way, it looks like Nylon scales are no longer being offered on neither side of the great pond. Since all of my inquiries to vendors or contacts I've established on each side, have all stated that they could no longer obtain any in 91mm.

Cheers,
Serge

That would be sad news indeed, I really like the nylon scales.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Agree with you on glueing scales on. Can't do it.
I've never tried the nylon scales. May have to pick one up to try out. I always heard they felt cheaper, so I've never tried them out.

The G10 SAK scales look great but I'm also not one for glueing scales on SAKs.

Love the idea of G-10 scales, don't mind glueing :D

What does SB stand for?
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

They're interesting, but like the copper SwissB scales (also cool), they cost more than I pay for most SAKs. I like'em though.

Amici,
You are correct, SB is an abbreviation Swiss Bianco.. He is the vendor who is currently offering these interesting G-10 scales.. Once again, I will have to add that I'll personally pass on anything that involves glue..

As for the Nylon scales, there is unfounded scuttlebutt floating around that they may seem to be cheap, but I can assure you they are not in the least.

For all purpose, they are actually quite robust, and can take all kinds of beatings without any real impact to the scales surfaces. They are also much more comfortable and "grippy" when using them hard depending on the task in place.

The only downside some seem to have but not me, is that the Swiss cross is screened or painted on, and not inserted directly into the Nylon itself.

To me, that fact is merely cosmetic, and is a small price to pay, when you consider the fragility that comes with Cellidor. In many cases even a mere sneeze from the wrong direction can cause severe dings and scratching!!

Cheers,
Serge

I like them a lot. I had to do a little filing on the rivets to get the scales flush to the liner. I also had to make a little more room for the toothpick and tweezers, the slots were way too tight. I used modest amounts of loctite gel super glue and clamped overnight. They're holding at least as well as the broken cellidor I took off. Still, I'm pretty sure I can get them off with out damaging them if I need to. They are very grippy.

A little glue won't hurt anything.

That looks great, I'm tempted to try it out.

Thanks! They are pricey but they are well made. Perfect to put on the explorer I use at work daily.

i just mounted a set of black g10 scales on a compact. and i want to  tell everyone that it had a lot of grinding involved. almost all holes for the rivetes were to shallow. so i dremeled the holes a bit and also dremeld down the rivets. but still the tweezers and toothpick are very tight fitting. so be warned before you buy those scales, that it needs some work, they are far away from just clip on and glue!!!

Thank you for sharing what jc also said.  Seems you both had very similar experiences.
