Now, to take my sportsman or a Spartan along for the weekend.... Nail file vs extra blade is the big debate. So long as I have a sharpening stone (which I do) I figure I'll be good on a single blade

I'd say Sportsman. Smaller and two additional tools (nail file and nail cleaner).

Day 10:

Switched back to ol'Blackie.

After spending several days with the old cross pioneer and now switching back, I can definitely tell a difference between the two when cutting up an apple. The last newer one is definitely better at slicing, whereas the older model starts to wedge the pieces apart halfway through. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think it's a combination of the slightly thicker blade stock and less polished finish on the older knife.

If the trees blew down the wind and no one was around, would the alphabet song really go backwards?

Day 10

"Spartan Thursday" in this minimalist rotation week. I fancied some baked beans, so the can opener saw some use.

Although - and  perhaps this won't be so popular - I don't really like the Spartan, and I don't really like Vic's can opener. For me the Spartan is just a big pile of redundancy, two knife blades and two openers - you can get more/better functionality in the same or even smaller form - the Compact/DofE adds scissors while the combo tool can do what the two openers can, the Sportsman gives you the nailfile in place of the small blade, and that can even be used as a 2D Phillips for small screws and it's also smaller, the same is true for the Wenger Commander, and on top of that it has a better can opener. That leads me to my other point: while I know how to you use both types of openers properly, and the Vic opener does a clean, smooth job, for me the hawkbill style opener feels more natural and smoother and it can also be used to make holes, open blister pack or as a scraper.

Day 11, sportsman de-ickifying some air fitting threads so they can be possibly reused as I do not have another hose or fittings handy for this machine  hopefully enough pipe dope will make a solid seal.

Well... You can always choose the Tourist instead of the Spartan too. Same thing in a smaller package, it's a win-win for me...  :D

If I owned one, I could! I'm really taking a fancy to the 84mm lineup, which is unfortunate timing seeing how much of the line has been cut and the availability of cheap used models is dwindling  :-\
The Wenger 85mm line seems to still be present on the second hand market though, and I've been gearing myself towards them.

Day 11:

Pioneer helped open the box for a new vacuum.

I hope it lives up to the hype, as it definitely wasn't cheap...

Day 11

"Pioneer Friday" (Pioneer Péntek - it works in Hungarian! :) ) Today it was the dark grey Pioneer's turn. I used the large blade for package opening, which brought me great joy, as it was my long awaited LM Pulse, and today the wife asked for baked beans on toast, so can opening was in order.

Excellent choice!  I've admired the gray Pioneer and regretted not snatching one up when I had the chance.  I do have a nice assortment of Pioneer colors so I have no reason to complain. I never cease to be amazed at the exceptional build quality--great Swiss Army Knives!

I can't decide which one to carry today  :ahhh

The black one has been with me for a long time and matches my edc really well.

But the red old cross is, well....it's red old cross!

Day 12:

After mowing the lawn, I decided the answer to my dilemma above is, "neither."

Instead, I'm going to carry this ultra minimalist little guy. Just hope I don't find too many loose screws ;)

Day 12

Today I carried my other Pioneer, black one with red scale. I find this even more stylish than the grey one. Definitely a good SAK for dress-up occasions.

You're making me NEED a pioneer  :gimme:

As for me, day 13, home from camp and trying to soothe the mosquito bites while drying out all my gear from the rain and my accidental slide into the creek during a water rescue demonstration..... Wenger commander opening the last peach Coke I've got. (My sportsman nearly fell from my pocket on the rocks but it remains in my possession!)

Day 14

Went back to my Golfer today. I kept one of the baked beans cans from the other day for some testing - I used the combo tool for can opening previously and remembered that it worked good, but I wanted to try it again after the recent use of the traditional Vic opener from last week, kind of back-to-back testing, and voila, it really works great. The lack of sharpened edge is no problem at all, small cuts in clockwise direction go pretty smoothly. For those that have some aversion towards the combo tool, worry not, it opens cans very efficiently.
