Mod User merit badge request: Here's my modded EDC!
on: August 08, 2018, 07:21:31 PM
It's not a big mod, but it's a mod nonetheless. I have a Coleman Pro Lock that I've been carrying pretty much every day. I really like this thing. I love the size and weight on my belt. It doesn't stick out very far in the pouch, and doesn't snag on things like larger tools do. I don't always carry the SAK, often I carry an OUTU or other large-bladed knife, as a SAK is somewhat redundant with the Pro-Lock, but this is what I'm carrying today so its what I'm posting.

Now to the mod... it's the scissors!  They're out of a Sheffield A100 clone. They didn't work well in the Sheffield at all. Very poor decision to use scissors instead of a saw blade. All I had to do was drill the pivot out a little, and it fit right into my spare Pro-Lock cartridge. I took out the serrated blade, and the nail nick on the scissors even lines up perfectly with the opening in the cartridge. It looks almost stock. The only thing that hints at a mod is that the scissors open slightly more than 180 degrees.

Just for FYI, today's EDC consists of the Pro-Lock in a sheath on my belt, with the flashlight in the extra pocket of the sheath. The Victorinox Troubleshooter (Originally with Marlboro scales, but now with blue Plus scales) in my coin pocket, a Minichamp on my keys, and my Original Grain "Barrel" watch in mahogany. (part number OG-10-002-WD)

This is the tool the scissors came out of. The Sheffield copy of the Kershaw A100. Instead of a hacksaw blade, the Sheffield has scissors. These scissors are awkward to use... so the sheffield is going to get a wood saw blade (eventually). The scissors were just a terrible choice for this A100 clone. When the tool is closed, the scissors can't be operated. When the tool is opened, the scissors are awkward as hell to use.

This also would qualify for a Time Lord level 1 badge too, I think.

Thanks! Here's the latest. I've gone ahead and built a completely new cartridge. Scissors, scraper blade, awl, and nail file with nail pick!

Looks great ChopperCharles!

I am so glad to see that other people love the Pro-Lock as much as I do.

I bought 3 of them so far.  Like you, I am in the process of modding the tools.  I feel like the pliers and the cartridge things on Pro-Lock are so well-made BUT for some reason the 8 folding tools are just not good enough.

I hope mine turns out as good as your did.

I'll just leave this here :)

Yep, those are Leatherman bit drivers in my last cartridge. I also added a bottle opener from a Sheffield A100 clone, as it A) was the only tool I had that was thin enough, and B) the Pro-Lock doesn't actually have a bottle opener.

I'm also going to send out the original file to Boggs. They're going to put it on a hydrojet and recut the file. They say that they can make most files sharper than they were when they were new... if that works, I'll be able to toss the extra file out of one of my mod cartridges, and fit a different tool in there instead. Or I suppose I could just replace the original file with the mod file, but for some reason I'm determined to keep the original cartridges intact.

Charles.
