Adding an Awl (Reamer) to a Wave and a Blast
on: August 10, 2018, 12:04:03 AM
I have found using the micro-driver tool awkward to manipulate when they are attached to our multitools, so I decided to delete them from the Wave and Blast tools and add an awl from the Rebar into each instead.

The Blast mod proved to be very simple.  First I used 2 Juice S2s to remove the pivot from the Blast.  I only backed out the pivot as much as needed to remove the saw, washers and micro-driver, then installed the awl and replaced the washers and saw.  I re-tightened the pivot until it felt right.  The tools lock just like normal, no clearance or closing issues with the plier head.

Even the nail nicks are staggered like it was meant to be that way.

The Wave was a little more involved as I wanted to put the awl on the outside of the tool stack and have the flat driver in the middle to use as more of a pry bar.  The issue is that the flat driver is too long in the middle as it interferes with the little plier rest tab.

To remedy this I removed the flat driver and micro-driver and then taped them together so I could eyeball how much I would need to shorten the flat driver.  I used a Sharpie to mark the end of the flat driver to be removed.

Once shortened, I squared up the edges of the flat driver and reassembled the stack in the order I wanted and then tested the fit.  The flat driver now comes to within a hair’s breadth of the plier rest tab without actually touching it.  It also sits about 1mm proud of the tab.  The pliers still close fully with no further mods needed to the flat driver.

I plan to use the micro-driver “off tool” with a lanyard through the pivot hole.  Much easier for me to use that way.  Here is the other MT I used to persuade the pivots to budge.  Hope this was helpful!

Great solution to the problem!  :like:
I just removed the flathead from my Charge and put the awl in its place. I'd rather have both and lose the micro driver.

Go for it!  It’s a fairly straight forward operation, I used a hacksaw and a dremel to shorten the flat driver (I got lucky and it fit perfect on the first go-round).
