Old Wenger Identification
on: August 17, 2018, 03:26:39 AM
My woodworking mentor just retired from federal service. All he took with him was his backpack and left behind a whole wood shop of collected tools from his nearly 40 year service. As we were going through his stuff fighting off the vultures who wanted to throw it all away and start new, I came across this knife. I found out that it was there when he took over the shop. To save it from process improvement, I decided to take it home and give it some long overdue TLC. I'd like start with identification. I found that the tang stamp was used from 1966-2008 and the scale stamp was used from 1975-2008. Any help narrowing it down from there would be much appreciated. Also, enjoy the pictures! :climber:

Looks like a Highlander. Nice basic 2 layer Wenger.

I believe that is the slightly shorter version of the can opener used between '76-'88, looks like an earlier version of the cap lifter/screwdriver as well which changed slightly in the late 80's, also no "W" on back of main blade which started in the late 80's.  I think you can date this Highlander between 77-88

http://www.sakhome.com has some interesting Wenger/SAK info.

Thank you both for the information. It's really neat to own a part of history like that especially coming from someone who taught me so much. I can't wait to get it cleaned up and ready for carry. And boy, you weren't kidding about a lot of information on that site. I got some reading to do!
