Sog Powerlock 30 day challenge
on: August 17, 2018, 10:31:24 AM
After winning Nix's GAW of the Powerlock and getting a few small nudges from Nix about doing the challenge it's time to start.

First impressions are good about the tool, it's big but not too big. The tool loadout seems good, the knife is sharp and it seems to be a good layout for work carry What I'm a bit suspecious about is the file, not quite sure it can knock over the MP800 file that has seen a lot of use but we'll see.
Never tried a Sog before so it was a bit unusual to not be able to open one handle as usual but I'll get used to it.

Day 1: Used the knife to cut a brakesnake(hose) for the parking brake at a bus at work, no problems there

And compared the philips driver to the philips on the MP800, Powerlock beeing the clear winner with longer reach and brand new and not mangled

*GLBM pulls up a chair*

This should be interesting to watch your challenge thread. I, for one, do like the PowerLock, so it'll be cool reading your thoughts on it.

The metal Gerber uses on their files seems to hold up better than any other file metal on other MTs. But, we'll see if the SOG PL file cancone through when needed. :salute:

Day 1 continued:
Used the flat driver to pry open a rubber cover to get access to the brake cylinder.

Tried the scissor on a zip tie, failed at that but did not really think they would make the cut.

Used the wire cutter to finish the zip tie job

W,

I used my PL knife less scissors on several materials and they worked phenomenally well. I think Nix had a defective set of scissors on his (now RF's) PowerLock. I'll do some comparison testing this evening(after work), as I now have two SOGs with those same scissors. And I always caution anyone to be weary of judging a tool as a whole, just by one person's example and experiences with it(I trust Nix to be honest, but I don't trust every example of a tool to represent the whole of the model). :ahhh

(and I still have my Powerlock. RF got the second one that SOG sent me, NIB.)

I had forgotten about you having received two! Very cool you sent him the new one. :salute:
I'd like to see if his scissors will cut strong, light paracord, and other reasonable materials. I will do the same at some point. The PL traveler and PowerGrab have those scissors. The Traveler also has modified handle covers, that solve some of the issues you had with the tools. The phillips on the traveler will open 90 degrees with the cover closed, and the scissors sit perfectly inside the handles. Such a widely different set of things with these PLs. It is almost like SOG uses parts from different years to build PLs, even if the parts are not the best fit with each other. :ahhh

I am not saying that SOG scissors are no good
I am more interested to know how RF52 scissors work
Compared to the scissors That Nix has got on The same MT
As he had a pair that needed a bit of work before they worked
So all I want to know is do these ones work :tu:

But yes indeed, it will be great to see how RF's scissors work. I just hope he didn't damage them on that giant zip-tie. :ahhh
