I wish Ireland was like the UK at least.... because in the UK, you can legally carry under 3” non-locking knives like SAKs without needing a reason. :D
Of course, it’s still a bad idea to take your SAK to the pub.  ;) so there are limits.

Agree 100%

But lets be honest; it's pretty much a daily occasion in cities like Dublin and Limerick, that someone gets jumped or attacked, so I would say that there is a good reason for the law being written the way that it is here in Ireland.
I tend to think that London and etc have the same problem.

Update:

After looking at the bit driver adaptor thingy in person, I wasn't feeling it at all, for me it was first of all too expensive for just a tiny bit which I have a gut feeling I will lose too easily, and ever since I started looking at getting my Rebar, I have been wanting to make it more personal to me, i.e also why I removed the knives and saw the way I did, because I was going to remove them anyway, and it was cheaper to buy the regular rebar than the knifmeless model......

....yeah, okay...blah..blah..blah..blah..yadda...yadda..yadda....long story short; I decided to go the "loki route", and ordered the 2D large bit driver and small bit driver parts and a set of Lokis wrenches too.

Plus I already have a homemade 2D to 3D bit adaptor which I have been using with my Charge.

I'll update the thread once I receive the parts and wrenches from Loki....and then it's modding time!  ...so have the popcorn ready!  ;)

While I am waiting for my parts and wrenches to arrive from Loki.

I keep looking at Annti’s review / comparison of the ST300 and Rebar, which got me thinking a bit.

Do you guys think the Phillips driver from the ST300, will fit in a Rebar? ...or is it too long(*insert “that’s what she said” joke*)?

It would require a lot of modding around the pivot area. ST300 tools are compatible with Surge.
What's wrong with the Rebar's own phillips?

Ah I see...

...oh nothing wrong with it, it’s actually one of the tools I use most. For the same reason, I wanted to see if it is “upgraderable”, so to speak, with a bit of extra reach.

Alright laddies!

After a long wait the stuff from Loki finally arrived, and here’s what I mcgyvered together!

So I wanted to keep all the full sized screwdrivers bit still have the small and large bit driver.

And here’s why..

I already have this homemade redneck fabulous 3D bit driver that I made ages ago for my Charge TTI, so I wanted to be able to use both 2D and 3D bits.

And that is especially when Torx and Hex are becoming more and more common, especially on European cars and different electronics

And it all fits nicely into my charges sheath as well!

And most importantly; no knives means it is legal to carry in public!

Even works with my small sockets...

There’s these long bits too...

And I can even go down this route as well if needs be...

I hope it this forms a better picture of what I had envisioned and what I was hoping to achieve with this “build” / mod

Woodies sells these “onsite” brand bit sets for €5, which comes with a regular bit adaptor for like a power drill.

I took that, and measured up the size of the leatherman 2D bits, and grinder it down on both sides to my measurements

I don’t know if that makes sense?

Just for inspiration; it looks like this up close

One thing to note, if you decide to have a go yourself; the 2D bit driver has this little locking arm; which it uses to secure the bits in place:

So cutouts like I did here are needed for the bit adaptor to lock in place, as seen below:

Here’s a better picture of the cutouts:

So you can buy these bit kits for like €5 or less depending on where you live, in my case they can be found from brands like; Rolson, Onsite, amtech, bluepoint etc. ...just whatever cheap brand your local hardware store carries...

Anyway..

They all usually come with a bit adaptor, driver thingy for a power drill. That’s what I used to make my 2D-to-3D bit adaptor.

The way I made it was pretty crude and “no effs given”

I measured up a 2D bit..

As well as the 2D bit adaptors insert (if that’s the correct term for it?)

And then just went to town on my grinder, until I got the hit the right measurements:

In my case I used a modified “multi function sharpener” from Aldis workzone brand.

When I say “modified” I mean; it was designed for sharpening like drill bits and scissors, but I modified it to be able to function more as a grinder instead.

Anyway; here’s the final result side by side with a similar bit adaptor I started out with:

For those with sharp eyes; I decided to add a more personal touch to mine with a diamond-like finish to it.

Nice work on the modded Rebar and the bit adapter :tu: Nice work in making it UK legal and keeping it very functional :like: What about the awl though  I guess that would depend on the officer :salute:

All this time and I actually never thought about the awl even once.

I’m going to swap the awl with the can opener for now until I decided what else to do.

Thank you for mentioning that

Quote from the Irish statue of law:
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1990/act/12/enacted/en/print.html

PART III

Offensive Weapons

Possession of knives and other articles.

9.—(1) Subject to subsections (2) and (3), where a person has with him in any public place any knife or any other article which has a blade or which is sharply pointed, he shall be guilty of an offence.”

I can actually see that the awl can fall into that category.

Kind of a vaguely stated law though, even ones keys or a pen can be “sharply pointed”?

Well, yes, but that's the problem with many laws of this kind. UK knife laws are similarly worded, IIRC. It all comes down to the police officer's judgement. Now, I'll accept that most police officers are reasonable persons and would not say that, say, your metal Parker pen constitutes a sharp object in terms of the law. But I am sure there are police officers around that, say, don't like Mondays and allow this to impair their fair judgement in less clear-cut cases. So, even as a citizen willing to abide by the law, you can never be sure you won't be charged with an offence.

The awl is a case in point. However, so are can openers (!) especially if provided with a cutting edge and sharp tip, such as the one on the Rebar (and some modders sharpen this to make a good package opener). If you take this further the thickness/width-to-length ratio of the small Rebar screwdriver might make this "sharp". Or needlepoint plier heads such as on a Wave.  :dunno:

(If you found any puns, these are intended :D)

Point taken!

I will admit that the awl is sharply pointed, but the can opener is more round tipped.

But either way, I might have a go at rounding it off more or swap something in instead.

Haven’t decided yet

To be honest with you, the only time I have ever had any run-ins with any police was because of speeding, every time for rolling downhill and without noticing it I was going maybe 5 Mph over the speed limit, in other words; something that could have happened to anyone.
But I have never been in any more trouble than that, or come across any police questioning / searching me for anything.

With that said, I don't plan on having any conflicts or problems with the law either, so I want to take as many safety precautions as possible. i.e. this whole thread. Like discussed, you never know what type of person the officer is or what his/her mood is like at the time of confrontation.

"Better safe, than sorry" as they say.

I am trying to think of what else could be cool / good mod option, as an alternative to the awl, can opener.

I am leaning away from scissors, mainly just because I don't really need scissors that much, plus I have a pair of scissors in my my Victorinox SwissCard, so I wanted to hear what other kind of options there are out there?

Please share if you know of any other alternatives  :)

One thing that comes to mind is a pry bar made from a large flat screwdriver by grinding a V-notch in it and beveling off one edge... it's still on my list as a possible mod for my Rebar. In your case you'd be able to replace the can opener with it and retain the large flat driver - i.e. you'd need one extra.

One also wonders if perhaps a package opener à la Wingman (short curved blade pointing inwardly) might escape being considered a sharp pointed object... not sure if there's enough metal to make it lockable in a Rebar, though, but maybe others have done this already.

Or an SOG V-cutter, but this might need extensive modding. I believe Obi1shinobee managed to get one in his Reblaster.

Alternatively, reconsider the scissors... these are very rarely regarded as objectionable. Wave scissors are a straight drop-in, with the thumb tab occasionally needing shortening depending on where you put it.

Yeah I can imagine that only tools off either a Wave, Charge, Blast or similar would be a straight drop-in as they are fairly similar in size and basic way that the tools deploy + lock and stow away. Everything else, I can imagine would need some sort of modding, in one form or the other.

I am already toying around with the idea of swapping the awl from my rebar over to my charge tti, as that is my hiking / camping tool atm.

So while I have it apart; I might steal the scissors off it...  ....maybe....perhaps...  :dunno: ...we'll see....I think I only ever used the scissors in it like 5 times........which is still 5 times more than I have ever used the can opener
