2008 Soldier marked #1 out 1000 questions
on: August 18, 2018, 06:47:14 PM
Hello everyone, I was hoping that somebody can help me out. I just purchased a Solider from an estate sale. The Tang is marked 08 and the blade has #1 out of 1000 on it. The knife is in mint condition. I was just curious how rare and I if should use or keep stashed away?

Thanks!

Good score  :tu: if it was mine i wouldn't use it, plenty others you can use..i think that one was made for collectors so i would just shelve it and admire its beauty  :salute:  #1 of 1000 of anything is rare, it's a good number to have, congrats :tu:

Is it marked like this one?

Hmm, i had it my head to be a 111 in that year as a LE, think we need more info or a photo, unless they did both Alox and 111 in 08?

It is a 111. Sorry I'm newer to this whole forum thing and collecting SAK's!

Ah, I've not seen one of those before.  :like:

I think it means 1 out of a thousand, not that it is #1. If it's like the 93mm one I posted, all 1000 have the same engraving

Hmm interesting. I'm torn if should edc or just make it a safe queen. The best part is I only paid $35 for it.

Thanks again

I can't tell you to use it or not. I know if it were me, I wouldn't even entertain the though of damaging such a rare knife. There were only 1000 - 08 first production soldiers marked as such for the US market, making it a rare knife. The final production run of the 08 alox ran to 5000, which in the grand scheme of things is rare enough as well. Yeah, I would buy another soldier as a user personally.

I think you paid a fair price for it. I personally am not too charmed by these "limited" runs, where the only "limited" feature is only some laser engraving. So basically you have a very common knife (mass production model, no special scales, no special toolset), put a simple laser engraving on it (which anyone can do for about $5), they don't even give each a unique numbering on it, it's just mass production of 1000/5000 SAKs all with the same engraving, and then call it a limited edition.

It's just my personal opinion, not trying to rant or step on any toes here, but I don't get why people on ebay bid way over a $100 for these

I mean, how would you even know they're real, when they are not numbered uniquely and come with a corresponding numbered certificate? I could just buy a 08 soldier in good condition for $50, engrave it for a few $ and sell it as a "final run" for over $100 and noone would know it's fake.

What am I missing?

Guess all i'm saying is that they're nice knives for sure, but I wouldn't overpay for them ;)
If I had one, I wouldn't use it because you'll wear off the one and only thing that separates them from the rest of the bunch.

They go for that much now?  :ahhh

I got mine when they first came out and were about the same price as an average knife.

That sounds fair to me!

The last ones I saw being sold were $96, $96 and $122...

Thank you both for the input. I really do appreciate it. I honestly bought because I've wanted a 111 Soldier for awhile and for $35 and the condition it was in (Brand New in the box) was just too hard to pass up. After consideration I definitely plan on keeping it in the condition it is and buying another one for a beater. I don't plan on selling it and if I were too I would just sell if for what I paid for it. Thanks again.

Let's put it in perspective. New in box 09-stamped 111mm Soldier costs about 45.- in Switzerland, you may find them for less but rarely NiB. An 08-stamped 111mm NiB goes for about 250.- and that's without any special etching on the blade.

It is only one of a thousand of these on earth... And even if you don't care about the etching, the fact it's an 08 makes it incredibly more valuable than any other 111mm soldier's knife on earth (not talking about a Damas forester for example)...

Put this one in the safe and buy another one. If you damage it you'll be biting your nails when you see one of these get sold for more than 300 bucks.

I'm of course talking about non-etched 08 in Swiss Francs but the exchange with USD rate oscillates around 1 to 1 year after year... Maybe these etched ones go for less but in doubt I would still keep it, and I think they probably go for more. The 08 is rare as first 111mm soldier year and as last 93mm Alox Soldier year although the last Alox is cheaper... It's still 2-3 times the price of the previous years. As evidenced on the flea market  display shown above.
