Wenger Swiss Grip questions and concerns
on: August 22, 2018, 06:14:04 PM
I just received a virtually brand new SwissGrip from eBay. Blade has its original edge, the jaws of the pliers have no marks, it's absolutely pristine. Even the bits look unused. However, I have some questions and concerns.

First, the bit holder has no magnet in it. Is this normal? I can see a round machined piece of metal at the bottom of the well, but there is no magnet. Whacking it with a pointy screwdriver doesn't chip it at all, so it's obviously not a magnet. Those little magnets usually crack and chip if you whack them with something. The bits don't stay in this adapter, nor does the adapter stay connected to the flat screwdriver. So that kinda stinks.

Second... the pliers drag and are therefore difficult to open and operate. The tool still has factory oil on the pivots, but I went ahead and oiled up the plier head some more...  with no change. They pliers drag pretty strongly, and require too much force to open and close. Especially to open. They operate smoothly, just with a lot of drag. Is this normal? I expect this from cheap chinese SOG ToolClip knockoffs, but not from a Wenger. To people who use this tool.... will it loosen up ever? Or will it always be this tight?

Charles.

I can't believe that no one has replied yet in this forum.  I have no experience with this tool, but based on my experience with Leathermans, I'm guessing that they will loosen up with use.
Now someone back me up or contradict me.

And then it could be dried oil too. Sometimes a good cleaning and moving the action open and shut in hot soapy water works the dried oil out.

It doesn't feel like dried oil. All the other tools are easy to open and close. Not a single nailbreaker, not even the awl. The tool looks and feels like it's brand new, unused, and unabused. Not a single mark on the drivers, not a single mark on the file. The drag feels like just a general tightness, like it's machined that way. I've also seen some youtube videos -- what few there are -- that also seem to show tight jaws. At no point do the jaws ever flop open or closed on account of gravity.
