It's not really a versus situation because both knives, you'll be over the moon to hear, are fabulous.
These are two great knives - both nice and small, built to last, comfortable to use and easy to keep sharp. I would have been totally happy with my Izula II before Father Christmas (Nix of this parish) generously muddied the waters with a Dozier Personal. Thanks Nix - I mean it dude - this is a wonderful gift
Where the Izula II is completely business like (think Boromir), the Dozier walks the walk but also looks the part (think Legolas).
They are roughly the same size as each other, length around 170mm or 6.5 inches, the spine of each blade is 4mm or 5/32 thick. The Izula is 1095 carbon steel with a powder coating and the Dozier is D2 steel. Not that these numbers mean anything to me but hey. They are both very sharp
Blades are around 75mm or 2.5 in. The Izula blade is a flat grind with secondary and has more belly to it but the Dozier has a hollow grind which makes it much better than the Izula for slicing food.
Scales. Both knives have micarta scales (my favourite!) but where the Izula scales are quite rough and grippy, the Dozier's are almost like bone - really lush
I took both knives out to the forest to test them together. They both process wood very well, with the Izula having the slight edge because it can be used to batten with - I guess the Dozier could as well, but the edge might suffer.
In the kitchen is where the Dozier trounces the Izula (not that the Izula is bad for food prep). Slices and dices beautifully.
The main difference in handling with these two is the handle shapes. The Izula is pretty symmetrical and so is comfortable in lots of different grips. The Dozier has shallow finger grooves and is ultra comfortable for the most part except when using a chest lever grip - then it's not quite as comfortable.
These are two knives I will never let go of, and I love them both. I'm in the process of making a leather sheath for the Dozier - it comes with a superb kydex sheath but it's begging for a bit of leather.
If I absolutely had to choose between them (say if Godzilla was going to crush my town if I didn't pick one) I would have to go for the Dozier. It oozes quality and beauty and utility. Thanks again Nix.
