Firebiner the pocket shredder
on: August 22, 2018, 03:56:02 AM
When I first saw Outdoor Element's Firebiner I thought it was a cool gadget. So I bought one...and thus started a love hate relationship. I have taked about this in a past 30d challange, but I forgot evrey lesson learned and tried again.

For starters every function on the tool works. As a tool it is functional.
That is the good.
The bad thing is the screwdriver and bottle opener are sharp. I have drawn blood on the bottle opener, not the line cutter it protects, the opener itself.
These protrusions will wear through any fabric in a matter of days. I have shreaded 2 pairs of jeans and 1 Dickies trying to use it for my keys.
I even tried electrical shrink sleeving to cover them and it wore through the shrink sleeving on a monthly basis.

Its good
Its bad
Its frustrating because I really want to like and use this product.

What's that knurled wheel that's almost out of the picture on the left?

Wild guess here: a firewheel. Probably why it is called a firebiner. Maybe.   :P   :D

Im also guessing like a lighter its function is to spark the flint within.

Yes the round part is a flint wheel. The flints are standard Zippo type (3X longer) and are replaceable via flathead screw capture. Unfortunetly it is also under enough tension to launch itself across the room every time. The upside is its steel and magnetized.

Edit:
The downside I have launched it 3 more times since my origonal post trying to reinstall it.

After 1 hit I am really glad I am wearing saftey glasses

The cutter is also removeable and resharpenable.

Wow,

I am really happy I saw this thread. I just bought one but didn't realize it would damage the pants...I think I'll wrap some Velcro wire ties around the blade part, but its probably worth letting them know. I still think its a great tool, but was probably only tested on the outside of a backpack and such.

Cheers,
H.G.

Maybe better suited to being attached to a backpack or sheath.   :dunno:

I got one of these, then after seeing this thread, chose to return it. I tested the tool first though and it was exactly as advertised...definitely not an In-pocket tool.

Cheers,
H.G.
