Colonial USA Knives--$5
on: August 25, 2018, 06:45:44 PM
Since Colonial (the original company, not the later company set up about 5 years later by a nephew of the last owner of the original company, which is completely unrelated except in name) has been out of business for going on something like 20 years now, the prices have gone up quite a bit on new stuff.

I found these private label knives made for the NRA for $5 a piece. It appears to be a Stockman with just the master blade, with an unusual linerlock.  I bought myself two (should have gotten several to give out to family and friends at that price).

Quality is not there on these, can barely open, unsharpened. Its weird. Made in USA too. Will do some work on them and report back.

For Colonial, I'm not expecting Case or GEC quality, but even by those in my collection over their entire range (from cheapo 1960s knives to Old Cutlers, which were high end equal to Camillus and Schrade). But even comparing it to lower end knives by Colonial, it's awful.

Mine showed up in the mail today. The one I removed from the wrapper to use I had to clean to remove grit and the awful smell of whatever grease they packed them in (kinda like a mixture of raw fish and sewage). Lock works, but seems to be a bit lazy sometimes, primarily from the fact that I feel the pins other than the pivot aren't too tight. I can shove a piece of paper between the liner on the side that the lock release is on and the backspring. Lots of up and down play in the lock. My old Colonial electrician's knife from the 1970s has a screwdriver blade that locks up like a bank vault.  Sharp, but the tolerances are pretty bad. Probably means it was made towards the end in '98.  But for five bucks, I can't complain.

I think I will use these to teach my little brother how to sharpen.
