All hail the new king of the multitools!!!!
on: July 12, 2015, 07:24:02 PM

Well, it may be the new king of multitools, at least in size!  What I am referring to here is the large black handled tool you see in the photos. This is a new tool made by a company I have never heard of, Kilimanjaro, and it is called the Magnus! I keep wanting to call it the MANgus!! I bought this online for just under $40.00 shipped, and the photo of the tool where I bought it did not really give you an idea of how large it is. Its dimensions were listed, but I did not pay a whole lot of attention to it. When it arrived in a huge box, I was thinking that they did not have a smaller box available and just threw it in, but after opening the package, it all became perfectly clear! Before I continue, here are some photos:

As you can see, it makes the Surge look like a keychain tool, and it even stands high over the SOG Blacktip! The blade on the thing is 4 inches, and it and the saw both lock. The two drivers do not lock, but they snap in place. The knife came pretty sharp, and I tested the saw in our backyard the other day and it did very well. The pliers on mine are a bit loose, and they are hard to use with one hand, but work fine. The SOG pliers are much better, as well as the Surge. Quality wise, at least on a first impression, the tool is worth the money I paid for it. In this regard, it is nowhere near the Surge or the SOG, but there is nothing out there like it that I have seen. I am not going to make this a lengthy review. I do not have the time, skills, or the will to do that, and I am sure not too many will be interested in this anyhow. I just wanted to show it off and give everybody my first impressions! Thanks for reading!!

Holy Smurf! :o  Are the pliers as uncomfortable as they look like?

That's a beast alright! It would be interesting to get a comparison of it with the Swissgrip though.....

I do not have a Swissgripp, but here it is next to a SwissTool:

By the way, who makes that Swissgripp, and are they still in production?

I do not find them uncomfortable, just a little awkward. The pliers are not the tools strong suite!

That's mammoth!!!! The Swissgrip was made by Wenger, and has been out of production quite a while now

What could possibly motivate people to build something in that size? Compensating for something?

It was something my mother and father in law gave me for Christmas a few years ago. I think they got it at Harbor Freight. I could not stop laughing when I took it out of the package! It is actually not a bad tool, you just have to wear work gloves while using it.

Did a bit more digging. In their product catalog, the knives all have the steel listed. The multitools do not: http://www.kilimanjarogear.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/F_945_Kilimanjaro-Catalog2.pdf

Probably doesn't bode well for the quality of the steel.

From my experience, most Chinese steels are not very good anyway. Mediocre at best. For what I paid for the tool, and what I would use it for, it was more than worth it.

OK, I apologize for bringing this thread back to the forefront, but I just received mine and Christ Almighty this thing is gargantuan. I really can't see it as being a useful tool, it's just so long, thick and heavy. It's a full pound in weight, and over an inch thick. It's a third heavier than a Surge! I like full-size grips (I occasionally carry a ZT 0200 without effort) but this thing is too heavy and too unwieldy for me. Suppose I need a full-size blade in addition to a full-featured tool? I can pack a Surge and Spyderco PM2 for less combined weight. It's a novelty, at least that's what I've resigned myself to keeping it as. Oh, and aside from the combo-edged blade, the rest of the implements somehow feel dainty (pliers, philips, flat driver) or short (saw/file). Definitely a drawer-sitter because it's not going to get much use. Oh, yeah, it also came so dull it wouldn't slice a post-it note. Bigger ≠ Better.

You know, it needs a bit of bulk to make a good paper-weight :D
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I used the saw on this last weekend to cut a few small trees and branches in our back yard, and it worked like a champ! It cut through them like butter!

Saw this in Costco today. Was in an even bigger Clamshell. Was priced at 16.99. If it does not sell the price might drop in a few weeks.
