Wave vs. Surge
on: August 28, 2018, 08:13:04 PM
Okay this idea is same as Rebar Vs. SuperTool 300
First of all i present my Wave its 2013 model and then my Surge is model 2016.
Surge is bigger version of Wave few extra feature added like bigger scissors and blade exchanger what can hold t-shank tools but Surge doesnt have small bit driver what Wave has.

Surge
• CLOSED LENGTH 4.5 in | 11.5 cm
• WEIGHT 12.5 oz | 335 g
• PRIMARY BLADE LENGTH 3.1 in | 7.87 cm

Wave
• CLOSED LENGTH 4 in | 10 cm
• WEIGHT 8.5 oz | 241 g
• PRIMARY BLADE LENGTH 2.9 in | 7.37 cm

As we see Surge much bigger than Wave and Surge is heaviest tool what Leatherman have.

Enough for blabber and lets start testing tools

  1. Straight Blade (both tools have factory edge)

 https://flic.kr/p/2asyeLd

Both tools have OHO blades so easy and fast acces.

I tested both blades on carving and round is tie cause Surge has bigger blade so when needed blade to carve wood more but then other half goes to Wave when need more precision carving its easier to handle it.
Cutting paracord and rubberband is also tie. Both blade cutted paracord easily while cutting rubberband was more difficult and didnt cut so well it
Difference between blades is size of blades and Surge blade is bit bellying when going on tip.

   2. Serrated Blade
https://flic.kr/p/LLXrS2

Blades difference is size, desing is exactly same only size is difference.
Cutted some paracord and rubberband and it felt that Surge did manage perform better.
Carving wood both performed good again but i gotta say its easier to carve wood with Surge cause size of blade.

   3. File
https://flic.kr/p/LLYzEe
Well both has same kinda file so only difference between these is how good it felt on hand and i give my points to Wave cause it didnt feel unnatural to handle while filing

4. Saw
https://flic.kr/p/LLYzEe
Well again sawing with both tools with regular saws and result is that Wave was feeling bit natural to saw and Surge felt bit akward when sawing

  5.Scissors

Well tried to cut paper, paracord and some rubberband, Surge manage perform better than Wave and winner is Surge. Surge scissors cutted paracord and rubber like butter but both cutted paper good.

   8. Awl
https://flic.kr/p/2asydiU
Surge has dedicated Awl with thread loop so wins goes to Surge, you can use Wave scissor as awl but be very careful when using it, it may twist or bend.

10.Pliers / Cutters
https://flic.kr/p/2asydfs
Grapping things with Wave is much easier than Surge but Surge Pliers has firmer grip when grabbing bolts or nuts.
Both cutted nail pretty easily and also electric wire was cutted easily, Surge has one advantage over this Wave and its replaceable cutters but in Wave+ has replaceable cutters too

   11. Overall
Both tool are great to use and im one of those lucky who has both MTs.
Wave is performing awesome on everyday job and is lighweight compared to Surge. Wave has flexibility with bitdrivers.

Surge is heavy duty tool what can perform awesome on tougher jobs and has flexibility with t-shanks and large bitdriver.

If i had to choose other tool as my everyday carry it would definetly be Wave cause it can handle jobs but doesnt weight much as Surge and it so easier to carry in pocket.

I have a surge from quite a few years back and it has the eye glass screwdriver included, it's a shame that the newer model doesn't come with it. It's a great tool and I'm having trouble deciding to upgrade/swap. I want a Leatherman with awl, eyeglass screwdriver, scissors in charge size, I have enjoyed the surge and it sure packs a punch whatever job I throw at it, I just want something a bit smaller, great write up

I would recommend modding Wave to get awl and/or bigger scissors and maybe blade exchanger

You're doing a great job on the comparisons.  Thank you for the time you are putting into this  :salute:.  This comparison is near and dear to me.  I struggled with the decision and went with the Wave.  At the time the new Surge wasn't around so that made my decision easier.  I later got a Surge ( old style ) and immediately like it.  I've since got the newer Surge and really like it.  I liked it so much that I modded my Wave into a mini surge.  Can't really go wrong with either unless weight is a deal breaker.

No it doesn't come with a small bit holder (it IS one) or bit, but https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,50191.msg843091.html#msg843091 .

I think Surge deserves some points for being able to use jigsaw blades, metal-cutting ones in particular.
Otherwise nice comparison.  :salute:

When was the small screwdriver removed?--mine is a  2011 model, but it's an older model without the replaceable cutters.  I got it from a military surplus store in brand new condition for $50--it was only missing the file (may have got lost in the store, who knows, and at the price, I didn't ask.

Just reading through your other reviews, with the ST300 and Rebar.

I am kind of leaning more and more towards that both the Surge and ST300 are more ideal for having in your Truck, Lorry, Van, UTV etc or maybe more ideal for being carried in a backpack / toolbox. Where they will see more heavy duty usage.

Where as the Wave and Rebar are more suited for as an EDC / Belt carry. Where they usually see light to medium duty usage.

Which makes sense when you think of it...#nosmurfsherlock #captainobvious

Kind regards,

I think the Wave/Charge family has a better function to weight ratio , for general EDC . That said , I do want to re aquire a Surge , not sure how much use it would see . If I want to go with a heavyweight tool , I think I’d be more inclined to the Swisstool X , simply due to higher implement density .

 Best Regards,

Chris
