My Surge Mods
on: August 29, 2018, 01:57:59 PM
Here was my first one a few years ago; replacing the Bit Driver with a Phillips Screwdriver from an ST300: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,57604.0.html

Recently I finally acquired an ST300 Medium Flathead Screwdriver (thanks again Dutch_Tooler! ).

I would prefer the order to go Small - Medium - Large but this won't work as the medium is too long to go in the middle (there's a conflict with the plier rest). It doesn't sit low enough as the lock release pivot interferes with part of the medium driver.

I have been filing away this area but I think I will get an angle grinder onto it. Another option would be to shorten the driver and put it in the middle but that would be more difficult.

The awl has been moved to the other handle. I'm trying to keep the can/bottle opener / wire stripper if possible but it's a very tight fit.

The phillips is wider at the tip and the awl interferes with it (which isn't obvious here because the pivots aren't tightened up and the tools are sloppy).

Swapping the phillips and awl alleviates this due to the shape of the Awl.

But the phillips doesn't work at the side due to it's wider tip.

I'm trying out other configurations - it's a work in progress.....

 you're welcome mate :hatsoff:

Maybe you could grind a taper onto the Phillips from the base of the square part to just short of the sctew head indents that accepts the opposing awl taper? Awl-Phillips-can opener?

I'll take a look next time I have it apart.
At the moment I am trying Medium - Large - Awl in one handle and Small - Phillips - Can Opener etc in the other. This also solves that issue but it's too tight regardless. I think the can opener has to go. :dunno:

Perhaps the can opener is amenable to thinning against the flat face of a larger grinding wheel... that should loosen up things...

Today I finished modifying the medium screwdriver to the shape of the Surge drivers.

Now it fits nicely (at top).

The other handle has just the Phillips and Awl for now.

Looking good, Synco  :tu:

I replaced the bit drivers for dedicated ones on my Knifeless Wave too. I think it makes for a better tool, and you can still use it with a bit adaptor off the phillips should you need to.

Thanks Al. There's another mod I did at the same time which probably isn't visible in the photos which will help with using the removable bit driver...

Well my OCD self would have preferred them to go in order from small to large but it wasn't to be. Although lengthwise they go from short to long.  :D

I would like it to somehow go back in one day but I don't want to do too much butchering.

Angle grinding:

Tidying up with a file:

I should probably stop there. I have a tendancy to overdo things...
