Coghlan's Can opener (P-51 clone)
on: November 29, 2008, 06:04:08 AM
Well I don't know if this will qualify....

My review is on Coghlan's Can opener which is a lower quality clone of the P-51. I consider it a multitool because it has more than one use.

What I liked

Its light weight.
Its Made in Canada
Its silver coloured(Nickel plated)
Has a lanyard ring
Can be used as a screwdriver

What I didn't like

Its very poor quality(nothing like the real Shelby P-51s)
It doesn't work in fact it bent the first time I tried to open a can

What I thought of it

Its a piece of crap.

Would I recommend it

Not really

:tu: That's a great review because it might have saved somebody from getting one home and having the same happen to them :-\ :D

ha that kind of negates any "good" qualities it has :D

Nothing like the US Shelby Co. openers, they are cheap enough where no one has to get a "bootleg" copy of one to!

The only reason I bought this one was it was Canadian and I figured it would be high quality. I wish I still had my shelby but I lost it a few years ago.

The problem is the real one isn't avaliable everywhere (I've never seen one personally), whereas coghlan's is in pretty much every store's camping section.

Around here even Coghlans are hard to find(I found it at Cabellas) the ones that are common are Coleman ones but there Chinese so I'm betting the quality is even worse than the Canadian ones.

I also bought the Coghlan p-51s and had the same problem. Coghlan also sells a p-51 type can opener that has a small spoon on it that works quite good.

I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

God damn it. I got four or five of those laying around. Where could I get a stock of good P-51s?

You would not believe the crap they call "can openers" around here. There's probably something better to be found in the military I guess, but I've had little luck tracking it down. Same for the coveted Israeli bandages.

I've got a couple. Indistinguishable from Coghlan's. If you want, I can run them through some test.

Where are they made UK or China? Also a test would be nice just try opening a can.

You'd be surprised. Coghlan's can openers have a "sharp" combo* edge and actually dig into the tin really well. Highlander's are a huge pain in the arse, but do the job. Apparently it takes something tougher than a few cans of tuna to push either to the limit.

It is unclear where Highlander makes its can openers. Which probably means China.

* There are two layers of metal, one extending beyond the next. I'll take some photos on the weekend.

That sounds like Coghlan's can openers. I wonder if mine wasn't hardened properly and thats why it bent.

Why, your experience with Coghlan's has been positively unfair. Perhaps if you PMd me your address...

I don't believe Highlander are a manufacturer.  I think, like Gerber, they buy in products and brand them as their own.  This mean some of their stuff is very good value (I have an excellent light-weight warm sleeping bag by them) but some of their stuff is less so.  :-\  I've used one of their can openers and it ,to be fair, OK.  I don't have anything to compare it to though.

You guys must all have duds. I use mine all the time, a couple times a week in fact. I even have 2 or 3 extra "grenade pins" on the same keychain as the can opener so if I break the pin that holds the blade down I have an extra.

Neither ships to Israel.  :(

I'd be glad to ship you one if you need a hand.

although I've seen that site before I just checked the IDF version, it seems to be the best one since its the only one with a bottle opener! I drilled a filed a bottle opener notch on an old P-51 I had.
