And all I wanted to know was why kettles heat water to boiling temperature by default, instead of the optimum temperature of 85 C that most tea blends prefer.  :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Some fancy kettles do heat water to a specific temperature. You can set the temp for the type of tea you are brewing: black, green, white, herbs, etc.....

For black tea, I've always been taught to bring water to the boil and then use it at that temperature.

I suspect that it is easier to make a thermostat that can detect hot steam (H20 > 100ºC) and then switch the kettle off.

And if you have a kettle that heats water to just one temperature (like mine), then you want it to be able to heat that water up to 100ºC.

What about instant mashed potatoes?

The instructions clearly say "add the cold milk to boiled water to attain optimal consumption temperature."

How am I going to enjoy optimal heated mashed potates from a bag when my kettle can not boil water, Pabs??!
Heat my milk in the kettle first??!!

We only use it while camping.
Easy to make on a single fire and ready within minutes.

Quite tasty too... for being an "instant ingredient"
