Grandfather's Restoration
on: August 27, 2018, 08:12:45 PM
I found this in Mom's basement storage, so I've been working on it today.
Pen was snappy but the main not so much but generous amounts of Nevr-Dull, WD40 and 3in1 oil and it works like new.
The other side was a bit worse but it cleaned up very well.
It's fun getting an old blade back in working condition.
I have no idea what it says on the handle.

The handle seems to read: Westliche Post
Which means as much as "Western Post"

Thanks  :salute:
That would make sense, Westliche Post was a german language newspaper in St Louis. MO. Established Sep. 27, 1857.
The great grandparents were German and there are old pics of them in st. Louis. Sitting on a porch with a shotgun.
Google fu.  :o

Nice to be able to look up about it.

It was fun looking it all up, all I knew is that side of the family migrated thru St. Louis some time in the mid 1800's. If Mechanickal hadn't pointed me in the right direction, I wouldn't have put two and two together.

Shapleigh was in business from 1843 to 1955. In 1918, the company name became Shapleigh Hardware Company. Shapliegh Hardware made the knife for Westliche Post.
Westliche Post was established in 1857 to 1938 as a German language newspaper and was Republican in politics.
The Westliche Post closed in 1938, which means the knife was made sometime before 1938.

Not sure how I missed this till now. Good job Dean. Good to find your grandfathers old knife. Glad you were able to get it back into working order. Neat history also. I wonder who made made the knife for Shapleigh Hardware. You probably all ready know this but the DE in the tang stamp is for Diamond Edge.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

You made me start searching again.  :twak: Thanks  :salute:

I know in 1864, the Shapleigh firm adopted DIAMOND EDGE as the brand for their tools and cutlery.
According to Goins Knife book, Shapleigh Hardware used the Diamond Edge trademark from 1864-1960. DE was also used by Norvell-Shapleigh from 1902-1915
I don't know for who made the knives or tools for them but Ulster had DE on their shield before ww2. So best guess Ulster.

From the 1961 Ulster catalog.

That would be before Albert Baer bought Ulster in 1941.

Yes before Baer bought Ulster.
The Westliche Post closed in 1938. So it had to be before 1938.
