on: September 02, 2018, 08:57:53 AM
a friend is sending me a sheet of titanium ~ 4" square .1 cm thick . slightly curved. its from old soviet body armor ( dont ask ) . i originally planned to use it for a knife , then did my research and found out titanium would make HORRIBLE blade material .

what would you do with it ?

Ti is a great material to make scales or handles from.
If you have the equipment to work with it...

A centimeter thick you say--I'd custom scale an SAK or a smallish knife in the stuff (it's only 4" so that limits it a lot) in the stuff.

They do make titanium knives, but they're mostly for ultralight backpackers and the like that care more about weight than the normal stuff like edge retention.   And supposedly Acme/Camillus has a "Titanium Bonded" coating on the blades, but I think that's more marketing than anything else.

SAK scales or maybe a one piece tool?  Maybe even something cool/decorative for the keychain?

A sacking needle for field repairs, perhaps? (Not just a single one from the whole piece, obviously. :) ) Tweezers? (Would require welding, peening, or something...) Toothpicks? The end pieces for a classic knife handle? (The piece(s) which protect the wood from wear on one or both ends of the handle of a knife like https://kniveksperten.no/mora-classic-number-1.html . (I don't remember the word in English.))

1mm is suitable for pocket clips or danglers.  Easy to bend and fold when heated and you can play with electro or heat anodizing.

Look for an aluminum foil quilt?  :D

Bedding aside, danglers and clips work, so might liners but it's pretty thin. It's too thin to really use for scales in one layer, but maybe sandwiched with something else. Not for a folder or multi, but on a fixed blade, leather or micarta washers with titanium spacers for the grip? Plenty of old theatre made knives in WWII used aluminum in between layers of leather or perspex.
