Build Report: Cadet X !
on: September 03, 2018, 07:28:43 PM
I decided to jump into my project to build a Cadet X, which is to say a regular Cadet plus scissors.  I obtained a donor Golfer and a brand new Cadet, still in its packaging.  The Golfer cost me $38, but it came in a lot with a Hiker and a Climber that I can give as gifts sometime.  The Cadet cost me $22 brand new.

I disassembled the Golfer and removed the scissors, spring, and liner that I'd need.  I was initially a little confused about liners.  I examined my Pioneer X and both liners were identical, and also differently shaped from the liner that came out of the Golfer.  After thinking about it for a short time, I couldn't come up with any reason why the Golfer liner wouldn't work in a Cadet chassis.  So I just dove in.  The Golfer comes apart:

Driving the last pin out of the Golfer, and disassembling the brand new Cadet.  I can tell you that I had no compunction about disassembling this particular Golfer because it was a beater that had lived a full life and had been neglected.  The brand new Cadet on the other hand....

With everything apart, the difference in shape of the liners is apparent.  I initially thought I'd trim the Golfer liner down to match the Cadet's liner shape, but decided I didn't have the right tools and would likely end up ruining it.  When I couldn't think of any reason it wouldn't work as is, I just decided to use it.  Next came prepping the pin stock.  I learned on my first couple of mod projects that the project knife will assemble much more easily if one end is rounded smoothly.

Next, the pins are inserted into my wooden jig.  The top scale is placed face down, then the opener layer, the opener spring, then the liner on top of that.  Everything is gently tamped down.

Next, the precious and rare 84 mm scissors are added with their back spring, the liner on top, and finally the knife and nail cleaning tool.  The force required to set the scissors back spring is greater than the opener layer, so I move the jig to the vise to hold it securely.

The mystery washer is added before the bottom scale is gently tamped into place.  At this point, the last brass pin is a bit of a trick to line up, but with a little effort, everything lines up and comes together.  The unfinished assembly is then gently removed from the jig.

I was bound and determined to do a better job forming my rivet heads this time, so I built a tool to help.  I cut the end off of an old rat tail file and, using a countersink drill bit, drilled out its end to make a cup-shaped forming tool.  This seemed to work pretty well.  I alternated using this with a 6 oz hammer and a 16 oz hammer, and using the ball peen end of the 6 oz hammer.  I have a block of steel that I put counter sunk holes in to accommodate the sides of the rivets I'm not forming.

After what feels like an eternity of gently peening and forming, and stopping to check snap and opening action, the knife is finished.  It came out great, and is the best (of 3) modding projects I've tackled so far.

Thanks you guys!  It was a very satisfying project and only took a couple hours (if you don't count eBay trawling time to track down a reasonably priced Golfer  ;) )

I still want to get better at forming rivet heads on my pins.  I welcome any and all suggestions for improvement here!

Thanks again,

Myron

Thank you!   Since posting all those pics I’ve improved the rivet heads on the brass pins.  I put the rat tail file forming tool that I made in the drill press and used it as a spinner.  I’m very happy with the results, and that’s with a home made out-of-round tool.  What I’d like to get is a carbide spinning tool professionally machined.   Anybody know of any sources?

As I said in the poll thread, really nice job!

The peening looks excellent!

Thanks Gustophersmob and Wspeed!

I'm planning my next Super Cadet X (best of both worlds?) and I think I can make the heads on the pins even better.

Of course I'll report back here with my results....

Looking at this again and .  Why did you add a washer on the blade?

Why did you add a washer on the blade?

The blade tang isn't quite as thick as the backspring on the newer knives* and the aluminium liner n the celidor knives is indented to make up the difference.  On an alox scale, which is flat, the washer is added to fill the gap.

* Older SAKs have slightly thicker tangs and the washer/shaped liner isn't required.  You need to be careful about mixing old blades with new liners and vice-versa.
