No love for the Centurion??
on: May 09, 2018, 08:53:25 PM
Can’t find a single YouTube video, in English, for the Centurion. Was it just not a popular SAK?

I really like mine. Has never let me down. Just wonder why we don’t hear much about it here in the States?

I'm sure I'd like the Centurion - I really like its slide-lock counterpart, the Adventurer. (Actually I was looking for a Centurion and ended up with the other one cos it was 5 euros cheaper...)
I guess it all comes down to the age-old corkscrew vs phillips argument. At the end of the day I prefer to have the corkscrew, which is why I have 2 Nomads, a Farmer (or two) and an Alpineer.
But for someone who doesn't need a corkscrew, the Centurion is a perfect lightweight and massively capable SAK. I may get one yet! Those 2 layer 111mms are just the best.

The only thing, for me, that would make it better would be if it had a one handed blade. I’m thinking about swapping in a blade from a OHO Sentinel.

I’m just nervous about tearing two SAKs apart.

It is a mystery why Victorinox is so shy about the OH plain blade... They really should stick one on a Centurion or a Nomad, I don't care which!

Here is my Centurion,,,that series of knives came out when I was a Victorinox dealer and I used to have all the models, but the only one I have left is the Centurion.

It offers a good size blade with some tools in a relatively light package.

What? Eh?  :o
Try this one with dual density OD scales. Probably don't see that every day.  ;)

Certainly no love for the Centurion from Victorinox - It's been withdrawn    :(

Although in practice it is still available under a new name - .....  The Adventurer

Swapping for on OHO blade will also require swapping the backspring since their a little different (the part where the backspring touches the blade pivot)... Just a heads up

At least on my fireman yes... initially tried swapping just the OHO blade from a sentinel... and it wouldn’t close completely... the tip was left exposed...

In the Wiki, where it reads:
"The Adventurer is a slim 2-layer Victorinox 111mm knife with a liner-locking plain edge blade."

shouldn't it be:
"The Adventurer is a slim 2-layer Victorinox 111mm knife with a slide-locking plain edge blade."

Disregard. Just read the full description.

The differences between these two are just the scale colour and the reamer vs. awl/reamer, right?

Yes, I believe so. The original Adventurer was the slide lock blade and smaller cap lifter/screwdriver.  The new Adventurer is just a red Centurion with the sewing eye in the awl.

Best I can tell anyway...

Crossed posts....

Not quite .......

So the Centurion was black and the new (and old) Adventurer is red - Correct

Re the awl: It's the liner lock awl vs the slide lock awl - So this means:
- Liner lock awl (Centurion/New Adventurer) - 2.5 mm / no sewing eye
- Slide lock awl (Old Adventurer) - 2.0 mm / with sewing eye
Both have the normal sharpened edge.

Capito?  ???

Is the Wiki clear enough ?  What Vic did was a bit contorted !!!

I bought a used Centurion a week or so ago and wow, I have nothing but love for it!

:like: :like: :like: :like:

Long, locking blade, a pry bar of a flat screwdriver, the pleasing smoothness of a back Phillips. Supremely comfortable to hold and use. I like the liner lock. By the end of day one it had replaced my alox Soldier as my primary work knife. :o  It fits my needs awlmost perfectly.

"Awlmost"? Two things. I really miss the 93mm awl. The cumbersome 111mm awl works and I'll keep on with it, but the 93mm is in a different league. It's the best tool I have for making holes in plastic irrigation pipes. Better than the tool made for the job. :salute:  The other day I used it to make drain holes in a gutter scoop. So easy and a neater job than a drill would do.

Awlso, I need a saw. I ummm'd and ahhh'd over buying either a pocket folding saw or another knife with a saw (whether 111mm or 130mm). Two dedicated tools versus a single less specialized but more versatile one.  For better or worse, I ordered a two handed Trailmaster on Sunday.

In reading about the OHT I see owners who love it, but have no need for the saw. I feel these users might be well served by the Centurion/new Adventurer. After all, the 91mm Tinker is hugely popular, and the Centurion/new Adventurer has awlmost the same toolset in a larger frame. Two handed opening is far, far from crippling! (And it makes the knife look sleeker and tidier, too!) :D

Nice thread.

I keep returning to the OHT non-serrated as an EDC because I have an irrational obsession with the one handed opening mechanism... for some reason a lot of the time I want to use a sak one hand is otherwise occupied or filthy! Like others, I do not have much use for the saw... particularly now, I have little use at all for it. For those few moments where I do need a saw, I have a Huntsman Lite in rotation anyway (the more recent light in these is great; by the way).

So a Centurion sits in the collection, and I would never part with it as it is a great model, but I tried it as an EDC for a few days and missed the one handed operation too much. I dream not for a single one handed Centurion/modern Adventurer... but two... :)

To be clearer, I was thinking of OHT plain edge owners. And I do agree that it would be to great have a OHO new Adventurer (given the Centurion is history now).

I've read this. It was a huge influence in my decision to buy the two handed Trailmaster.

I find the lack of love for the knife odd given that it's really just a Large Tinker.

My only Centurion is DAK skinned, and that´s why I got it. I don´t carry it because it lacks a saw.

Funny. With those scales it looks just like the original OHT. I do have one of those as well, albeit without pocket clip. For 111mm I prefer belt sheath carry.
