Not really a “mod” per say, more just cosmetic enhancement.

This is just something I came up with while waiting for a call back, and as some of you may know, I like the “worn” or “Patina” look more than the “new” look.

Anyway...

So one thing that has kind of bothered me about my Stanley utility knife, was it’s awful one cheap looking wood handle. Since I don’t have a workshop to fabricate my own handles, I decided to just have a go at it another way.

Here’s what I used:
- Stanley FatMax Permanent marker
- Farrar Tanner tool oil
- some kneenex paper towels

So all I really did was to color up the wood handle with the permenant marker and rub it down with the oil and paper towels.

Here’s the before / after:

Before:

After:

The Stanley FatMax permenant marker is a water resistant and “marks” with a very durable marking ink, so this doesn’t rub off on my hands.

Personally, I think it made a worlds of difference, but let me know what you guys think.

Just a silly little idea, and for me it was free too, didn’t have to go out and buy any wood coloring or varnish, which are usually expensive.

To be honest, it looks a lot better irl than in the pictures.

But yeah, I guess there isn’t much to say about it, just thought I would share it anyway

Good trick  :tu:

If you want another cheap wood stain...

Put wire wool in a jar with vinegar (I can't remember the name of this stuff)
The resulting stain reacts with the wood

Heres one link theres tons out there

Very nice results, MMR! :like:

I'm lazy. Blow torch and lacquer for wood patina.  :waving:

I did a little more “polishing up” on it this morning, as I wasn’t fully pleased with yesterday’s results (not that I had high expectations in the first place).

It has more of a “mahogany” look it it now, with a deeper wood tone as well. I don’t think it will get much better, given that it is literally a “permanent marker that has been smeared out” type of job.

And again this is what it looked like before:

FYI: the little white dots in the pictures are just fluff from the paper towels

I thought they were bits of icing sugar from your cake.

Nice job - it definitely improves the look  :salute:

Oh. I didn't see your watch, just the icing sugar on the scales. Have you got sugar on your watch as well now? Do you need a napkin?
