Metal file layer: chisel/awl swap?
on: September 07, 2018, 01:54:11 AM
Hey guys, I have a plan to add a metal file to a Vic Compact and I'm looking to swap the backside chisel with an awl. Just looking at my Champ, it looks like it will be an easy swap if I thin the awl a bit. They seem to fit the springs fairly similarly.
 Has anyone tried this?
I'm basically looking for a simple way of adding an awl to a Compact and the file won't add much thickness. Plus, I just like the old school metal file  :climber:

I believe that the awl is thicker than the chisel, so it may not fit.
But if you thin it like you say, its a possibility. :tu:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I think I'm going to try it, just a bit thinner and it looks like it will drop right in without further modification. I'll of course post the results  :drink:

So I thinned the awl, which took ages, but it worked. Everything snaps and fits well, but still some peening to go.
I thought of removing some material from the liners instead, but couldnt figure out a way that wouldn't look messy.

On that note, I can't wait to get some scales on this thing. Those flimsy aluminum liners don't take much to mar and bend  :ahhh
