Oak scale SAK mod question
on: September 10, 2018, 02:36:08 PM
Does anyone know if it's possible to add oak scales to a SAK mod with exposed rivets? Will the oak be strong/hard enough to stop any movement of the tools once peened?

It's a standard modern 91mm SAK I'm modding.

Cheers for any opinions.  :salute:

Ideally, at least one pin needs to be peened to something more substantial than wood. If you're not using bolsters, I would suggest peening a hidden pin direct to the liners. The other three pins should then be OK left exposed and peened in the oak I reckon. However, there is still a risk of pull through if heavy twisting occurs, such as the cap lifter driver was used hard.

Cheers Al - yes, I was going to peen the small pin to the spacers. Maybe I'll peen both of the middle pins to the spacers and then just expose the two end ones. It's anm experiment I've been meaning to try for a while.

Sounds like a fun project  :like: Glue on would be the easiest and strongest option but I do understand the appeal of exposed rivets :tu: Can't wait to see the pics and see how it stands up to some use

I'm going to answer yes, (and do what Al said  :) )
I'm thinking that...
Knives work with stag scales and Oak is some hard stuff so my answer is yes  :tu:

I did something similar to an Executive for my girlfriend. I don't know what wood I used other than that it was fairly hard. It has held up so far but the forces involved are bound to be different in the 91 mm scale.

I did it by gluing the scales to the liners but some creative use of pins (to keep liners and scales aligned) while drilling should leave you able to both glue the scales to the liners and have the hidden pin.
