My new Gerbers
on: September 11, 2018, 12:19:02 PM
I have ordered a few Gerber MPs last week, and they are all in.

I have,

MP600 Bladeless (BO)
Diesel (BO)
MP600 Pro Scout with Driver Extension Kit & Bits
MP400

I will use MP400 and Pro Scout around and in the house.
Diesel in the shed and garden
The Bladeless to be carried with me when outing.

I also have LM Surge and Swiss Tool X, which now are just on display. Maybe will sell them back.

The MP 400 is about the half size or more than MP600s, and it is a lovely cute tool for EDC, but I don't want to take off the blade, because it is a nice wee sharp blade with both normal and serrated edge very useful for opening parcels, cutting tapes and sharpening pencils etc. So just will use in and around the house.
It is an excellent house EDC. :)

The MP600 Bladeless is also excellent although it comes with a bit unfamiliar looking Remgrit saw.

It is good to have a nice tool to carry around in public being fully UK legal.

Give yourself at least a month - preferably two or three - with the new tools before selling anything.  :pok:

You may find that sometimes you need a one handed blade, or a longer Phillips, or a diamond file, or a chisel blade, or a......

Thank you for great advices and info.

Yes, I think I will hold on to the tools for a while rather than rush out selling them.
The are all great tools. But it is just I found the Gerber MPs more practical for actual usage.

I was a bit dismayed the Swiss Tool X was not able to grab the handle of my powered Magnifying Glass due to too small plier opening, which made me to go and search for the Surge. But Surge was not even enough. It was just managing and no more.

The Gerbers handled it no problem = largest opening of the plier jaws among all others.

Thanks :)

Congrats on the Gerbers, mTool!

For everyday 'busting it up' work, it is really hard to beat the MP and Diesel series. Gerber tool steel seems to be as close to perfect for abuse as any MT tool steel can be. :)

Yup.

One thing I noticed was that MP 600 and Diesel (BO finish) came with oils on the steel, but the mp400 didn't have any oil at all out of the box.

I wonder how long you can keep up with writing in just haiku. :D

Yup.

I noticed that some of mine came oiled and others didn't as well. Fine by me though, as I coat everything I carry in drying (dries to a strong film that fills the micro cavities in the metal) silicone oil. Four or five applications to start and one application a month after.  :)

Are these oils = silicon oil? applied on the tools environment and health friendly?
I was just going to put some WD40 time to time, and wipe out with clothe.

Here is what I use:
https://www.amazon.com/3-IN-ONE-All-Temperature-Silicone-Drip-Oil/dp/B0122T2X9M

But, nowhere does it say if it is o.k. for health or not. But, it has no warnings or anything. I don't use my MTs for food prepping, so I don't normally think too much about it.
It doesn't have much of an odor either. :)

CrC sells something similar for food manufacturing.

I wouldn't use MTs for food prep either. I have a stainless Opinel for that.
But if I had to use MT for opening food cans, then I would hesitate because it will touch the food content in the can while opening, and the BO finish on the MTs such as Diesel or Bladeless? could make me think twice using them.

I don't think minute amounts of oil chemicals, infrequently, are ever going to be an issue. I've accidentally left older style oils on tools before and used them to cut food. Ate it anyway. Wait....maybe that explains some stuff.
