What kind of oil/lube do you use on your LM MT?
on: September 11, 2018, 01:45:28 PM
I started out using Tri-Flow but it didnt stick around long enough, it seems to be more of a lubricant and less of a preservative. The I moved to 3-in-1 oil and it has a better window for me but I worry that it might be poison. I was thinking of starting to use clarified lard but then the bears might eat my hip when I go into my sons school. Tell me what you like to use and why so i can piggy-back off of your knowledge....

A bit of 3-in-one isn’t going to harm you: https://www.wd40company.com/files/pdf/sds/3inone/3-in-one-multi-purpose-oil-w-telescoping-spout.pdf

Might taste a bit odd though, so anything that goes near food gets mineral oil.

I usually use a little Ballistol

Non-toxic, lubricates and protects.

But food-quality mineral oil is great, too.

Mineral oil generally, but I find 3-in-1 is excellent.

So I guess the majority use mineral oil. Is there a difference between cutting board mineral oil and the stuff you all use?

What about cooking oil? If tools are to be used for food prep?

Cooking oil will turn rancid after a period of time.  Mineral oil is food safe and won't turn rancid.

I suppose if you clean your knife thoroughly on a frequent basis, cooking oil would be fine to use.

3 in One oil. Does a great job and I wipe off all excess. You won't really get it on your food if you wipe off the excess after working it into the joints and don't try to use your Leatherman like a chef's knife.

I could see going to mineral oil, I just don't have any handy at the moment, and I understand that what we call mineral oil here in the USA is a bit different than what the same name implies across the pond, no?

Either 3-in-1 or Birchwood Casey Gun Oil. The latter works really well, but stinks bad.  I really recommend 3-in-1, old timers used it for decades on their knives, and didn't die from it.

After trying a dozen oils(mineral to sewing machine oil) on MTs, I found the absolute best(for me anyway) is an oil that dries to form a fine layer of protection on the metal. No smell once it dries. It is the 3-in-1 BRAND, but it is their Silicone drying lubricant. It also penetrates the pivots and helps lubricate it as well. Areas exposed to air dry on an hour or two. Between the pivots dries in a day or so. No dust attraction, no slime to wipe away, and holds up really well. You don't even have to wipe off the excess if you don't want to. It'll dry, but will take a little longer.

Camellia oil for carbon blades, nano oil 10 weight for knife pivots and locks.

WD-40 Motorcycle break cleaner and TF-90 for cleaning stuff.

Mainly for multis Balliistol and AC-90 for general use. The Vic Spirits get the nano oil

On my MTs I use 3in1.  On my SAKs and folders I use mineral oil these days.  On my carbon fixed blades I still use frogs lube.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen,  I'm going to try mineral oil or Ballistol the next time I see one or both of them. But I guess I won't  sweat using the 3-in-1 Oil too much....

I bought some of that Victorinox oil a while back and that tiny bottle has actually lasted me a while and still have plenty left.

I did just buy something called Superlube. It’s for my hand tools and air tools but I might give it a shot on a multitool.

I've had the best luck with the oil used for hair clippers(Wahl), it doesn't gum up or dry up in a gritty way, like everything else I've tried. If you have a hair clipper kit it's usually bundled in the box.

You know it did cross my mind to try that oil long ago but never did. Glad to hear it works well and is basically free. I’m willing to bet a lot of people have some of that laying around their house.
