Were there any 93mm Alox made in 1959?
on: October 08, 2018, 01:57:49 AM
As the title implies, I have been looking for a BY Alox Pioneer made in 1959. I have been looking for years almost every single day and I have never seen one. Any members here have an example to put my mind at ease?

I believe that the 93's were introduced in '57, but a BY would imply a dated blade, and that would be a Soldier/SI and those started in 1961.
Your BY would be a wood fiber scaled Soldier/SI.

In very short : Maybe but that's highly unlikely, and it wont be an offical soldier knife.

Bit longer:
-maybe on a "prototype" or an army-testing unit from when the model 61 was in the process of being approved for army usage. If one existed with a 59-stamped blade it could very well have been maimed or destroyed in the rough testing.
-maybe surplus blades from '51 models were put into very early Pioneer knives (not sure about compatibility) but that would be extremely difficult to find.

Thank you folks, that explains my difficulties in finding one. I had assumed that since Alox was launched in 1957 the tangs had been stamped from 57 onward.

Wood fibre it is!  :climber:

From 1959 there are also model 1951 Wengers with Grilon scales. Better material IMO.

Oh, nice one. This is getting interesting!

Are the tangs stamped with the year date on those Wengers?

I was showing my brother a 1957, his birth year, Grilon scales on eBay a couple of days ago...sold for right at $190.00. Was nice for sure!

They are from an item that was for sale about a year ago. It's not currently for sale. Sorry. I have seen others, though, so they do come up occasionally. I think that prices for ones in good condition are usually in the $100-$200 range.

hmmmmm......'59.....I'm pretty sure one of your contemporaries, Moses, carried a '59 SAK during his desert hike. You might check the used markets in Jordan, Israel, or Egypt.   :pok:

If you are keeping it as a collectable either is good but EDC get the Grilon its really tough and the knife can get damp without the scales warping .... which is nice :)
