Wood carving with MP400
on: September 12, 2018, 10:06:23 AM
Did some wood carving with my newly arrived MP400, and it worked good.
The blade is very good quality and size for wood carving. It is razor sharp.

I carved away a few hours, and then cut some paper. The edge was still razor sharp retaining its sharpness very well.

Serrated edge is also very useful = works far better for opening parcels, packets and cutting thick cardboard boxes. It doesn't need to be sharpened as often as plain edge if at all.

Plain edge knives usually struggle cutting thick cardboards, and gets dull afterwards unless it is made of super high quality steel such as CPM154.

Very cool use of the 400 blade. I often wonder about the effectiveness of that blade, since my 400s have the older style blades. Glad it seems to work well. :)

Yeah it seems ideal blade for wood carving due to smaller size, gives more control.
But the steel seems excellent holding edge very well.
Great all rounder utility & carving blade. I like it.

that's a very good blade, I really like it on my MPs, but there is one caveat

on all my Gerber MPs with it, the very tip touches the scale upon closure or the handles, or the pliers or any other implement  :dunno: (usually when folding it up or deploying it) and that dulls the very tip, arguably the most vital part of a Wharncliffe blade

Yes, true. If blade touches any metal, then it will go dull unless it is made with super steel with highest hardening process, I would imagine.

I try to make sure it never catches or touches metal part being cautious when closing or opening the blades. :woohoo:

I'm also a fan of the Wharncliffe for a general purpose, and carving blade, since you can be pretty certain where the blade's tip is when carving cutting and less slipage from the belly. And although I don't carve with my MP600, I like to keep it protected. My solution was to add a thin piece of handlebar tape from when I recovered my bicycle's 'bar, and it has been great so far. I'd guess it can be done to an MP400; pretty cheap, easy, doesn't interfere with the pliers' sliders, and probably can be done with a piece of rubber.Sorry for the blurry picture!

Aha I know what you mean. When the bladed is closed, I noticed that it touches and keep touching the metal handle, and it maybe be dulling the blade.

Yes, I think the edge is touching the metal scale.

Not sure if it will seriously affecting the sharpness of the blade yet. Just having had it for 3-4 days.

So far, it is still keeping its edge very sharp. And I have closed and opened the blade about 100 times.
Will see in weeks, how sharp the blade would be then. I will not try to sharpen it until observation and some testing.

My friend my solution to blade dulling is double sided tape placed for the blade to land on.BTW spring  jig works on MP400, MP450. Good luck and enjoy modding
