So what does the new EU Internet law mean?
on: September 12, 2018, 08:23:51 PM
I heard that the EU voted in a new copyright law, with two parts of it (article 11 and article 13) said to be bad for the internet in its current state.

When I looked them up, if you listened closely, you would have heard a faint woooosh with the words going over my head.  I don’t really understand the ramifications.  :-\ Something about companies needing to screen for copyrighted content that the users upload, and having to pay royalties for the copyrighted content that they link to?  ???

Wikipedia topic about it, scroll down to the relevant articles under “content”:

It won't affect MTO.

Embedded vids off YouTool might have their content screened, and vids might be pulled by Gargoyle if they have copyrighted content in. Aside from that, I can't think of anything copyrighted that would make its way onto these pages, aside from advertising materials, which would be doing their creators a service.

As regards the rest of the net, it might affect people wanting to stream TV programs, films, music etc, depending on whether the site they're hosted at give a crap about complying with EU law. From an individual user perspective, the fact that the 'net is geared more around data harvesting than data providing is still a bigger annoyance to me.

I remember when the internet used to be fun...  ::)

I would suggest reading this article from the EFF.

Don't make mistake of thinking this is about copyright, there is wider implication that I'm not going to discuss here, simply because it would break one of the forum rules.

I've noticed that since the privacy thing came in a while back, but noticed anything new yet from yesterday's vote.

Very unlikely, but....
It would be interesting to watch if google and the other big websites did a EU blackout in protest.  :D
Imagine the drama!

I mean, google already has its google news search disabled in Spain, so it could happen in theory!

After talking with friends who are paid to be in the know, they are all waiting for the legal rulings. But until then they are all planning on a worst case interpretation. Starting with accidental product placements in the background are almost certainly verboten, possibly to the point that all but the most carefully arranged photoshoots could be accidentally illegal, and DJs in Europe probably won't be able to mix with samples. And no equivalent to the US Fair Use laws on that side of the pond, so all the amateur music videos, covers of any variety, and even things like people quoting lyrics and poetry in public forum (such as MTO) could all be potentially the target of legal action. Even karaoke.

I was told in a nutshell that the bullsmurf that you go through with "Happy Birthday" in the US has a very strong chance of becoming the norm from the Channel to the Russian border. And that it feels like someone was trying to write the most anti-YouTube law possible. Given that someone in Brussels seems to have a mad-on for Google/Alphabet and it's divisions....
