Dave Canterbury's Custom Leatherman
on: September 14, 2018, 05:23:02 PM
I had seen somewhere that Dave Canterbury carried a Factory Custom LM, so I got curious.

Leatherman Dave?  :D

Features:
Custom made fillet knife
S30V skinning type blade
Diamond File
Saw
Reamerpunch
Can opener
Phillips
Flathead
Rebar Pliers
Wave handles

I think I have seen a mod somewhere here that is just like that (but probably with default blades).

Do you think people would be interested in this model? Assuming Dave's name did not add to the price.

It's not a bad set-up I'd say.  I've never been a huge fan of the LM bit holder so the proper 3D Phillips is a bonus IMO.  For my money I'd have the medium flat driver rather than the large.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Why does this set-up remind me of my ReWaveR?

I like the idea of the bit-holder but if we're being honest 90% or more of what we fix on a day to day basis is covered by the phillips and flat drivers.

Ever since I saw that clip of Dave getting a tour and a Factory customized Leatherman I've been thinking how much money I would throw at them for the same treatment. I mean, being able to pick any current platform and any blade/tool in the factory while having them offer advice and some on-the-spot-grinding, maybe a little playing with the layers.... Man, THAT sounds like smurfing good time! I'd go $200 pretty easily.

So what would you chose?

As far as platform goes, either Surge or ST300
For tools I'd start out with a full phillips from either ST300 or Rebar
Then scissors (not sure which)
A wood saw
An awl
Can opener
Medium flathead
Diamond file
Straight blade not 440c but something nicer (but I might be talked into the serrated),
A large flathead blank so I would have the most material to make a gouge like Fowler did for his Alone MT
Then... I'm not sure. That's where I would want help with the amount of space left. Also I'd want to take a closer look at the tools available from other platforms to make sure I'm getting the most out of my choices....

Annnnnd now I'm looking on the Leatherman website to get a better idea of what I want for my imaginary tour.
