Online streaming services- enough already!
on: September 17, 2018, 02:36:03 PM
I have a Netflix account, as do most people nowadays, and in fact, we have two since Megan has her own, separate Netflix account.  At $11/month, not a huge expense, so why not?  After all, like many of us, it's my most watched service.

I also have CraveTV, a Canadian streaming service that has a few titles that Netflix doesn't carry, such as the new Star Trek Discovery, various celebrity roasts, South Park and a Canadian show called Letterkenny.  Worth the $6.99/month even though the app is buggy and kind of frustrating.

Then I got Amazon Prime Video because I got an Amazon Prime account by accident- it was free for a month and I forgot to cancel Prime before they charged my credit card, but what the heck, it's only $30/year and I get the benefit of shopping as well.  That's handy, because I have found a few things on Amazon that I needed but couldn't find anywhere else, like the gaskets for repairing my fiberglass kayak.  Plus it's dirt cheap compared to my Costco membership, which I believe is something like $120/year.

Now there's YouTube Red on the scene, and I really enjoyed the new Karate Kid series called Cobra Kai.  So far I have been downloading those on Showbox because YT Red isn't even available in Canada.

There are also shows on networks like History or Discovery that I want to watch, but I really don't want to pay for more TV since I already waste too much time in front of ye olde idiot box.  I'm glad that Hulu isn't available in Canada or I'd probably have that too.

I don't need/want more streaming services- enough already!   :twak: :twak: :twak:

Sure it seems cheaper than having cable, but the reality is that I am already paying $100/month for my internet connection, and if I was to do the math, it might actually be cheaper to have cable than to have a bunch of different "cheap" streaming services.  TBH, I am avoiding doing the math for just that reason.

I can't wait until the smaller streaming services decided that it is too much trouble to maintain and just sell their content to Netflix or some other one.  There's getting to be too many, and the worst part is, there are one or two shows on each that I am interested in, and that's just not worth having yet another streaming service set up.

I know, I know, first world problems, right?

But seriously, no more streaming services!   :twak:

I don't really understand how people have enough time to watch the free-to-air stuff, let alone paid for TV.

I only subscribe to Spotify.  £10/month is a bargain, IMO.

I was going to watch Deadpool ( the first one) on Netflix, but there wasn’t a “right time” for a while. Then I finally get around to it, and it’s gone! Netflix took it away.  ::)
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

We dumped cable.

Then we dumped Netflix.

I can't stand paying a monthly bill for a bunch of crap. The new business model is to get consumers hooked up to a service where they are slowly bled of their incomes. TV, internet access, video games, phone service, music, car leases, rents, subscription boxes, the list goes on and on. People have been lost. They have become revenue generating units for big business.

Welcome to the Matrix.

You didn't miss much Pabs - just like every other marvel effort but with knob gags thrown in.

Like H, we just don't have time to watch tv, nor the inclination. Occasionally watch a comedy if it's decent enough.

Ditched BBC license years ago and subscribe to NF if and when there's something good to watch

No television, got rid 10 or 11 years ago.
No streaming services.
Very little patience for YouTool, but I do watch the occasional clip.

I do miss watching movies, but not enough to pay money out.

If I want to watch idiots operate a tow truck... I’ll just go sit on the side of the closest highway!

Sorry, going to watch TV now. Netflix, Apple TV, YouTube and cable all on split screens...

Buhbye

There are a few, but perhaps the best known is Highway to Hell, about two trucks in the Rocky Mountains.

Why don't you and your lady share the Netflix? I am using my sister-in-law's subscription, which has 4 separate accounts. I still have cable TV because my old folks are internet/ smartphone-challenged. There are not many things to watch on cable nowadays. The most watched channel in my household is the Weather channel. On my part, I have maybe less than 5 cable TV channels I actually watch. The Netflix brings me Asian comedies and shows, which I think much better than many American ones. These two services cover my entertainment needs. If I miss anything, there is the internet.

IMO, $120 Costco membership is cheaper than streaming services.

We don't share a Netflix account because we both had them before we started dating.  She has all of her shows, lists etc set up the way she wants them so she doesn't want to jump on my account.  My parents use my account as well, so I don't want to just cancel mine.

Makes perfect sense, right?

OK I also like the TV show

Highway Thru Hell

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_Thru_Hell

Whats not to like here?

They feature and use the worlds largest MT every day to keep traffic rolling and I would otherwise get little to no exposure to machines like these.

I am also grateful for the weather that I live with every time I see how it could be if I lived in in Canadia!

I have cable and amazon prime. Amazon prime I use most for the music streaming and pays for itself annually just in the savings it gives for free and next day delivery. The firestick with amazon is also a good tool to house kodi to stream lots of good movies.

I grew up without TV, so when I moved out and got my first TV I was instantly hooked and binge watched everything... about a month later I was cured and I have mostly stopped watching TV. I still have TV because its part of my internet plan and I do record British Quiz shows, but it records way faster than I watch. I either download (legally) or rent (from the library for an annual fee of $15) movies and watch them.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Yeah it’s a bit too much. We have Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. So far it’s still cheaper than getting cable in my area.

But I miss the time you just turned the dial to change your channels.
