Whilst I applaud AXEM for pushing the boundaries, I'm also at a loss as to who this is aimed at.
Clever though it is, it's still perceived as a gadget.....a very sharp gadget!!
But anyone who is conscious enough to edc a SAK or MT for life's unknown, would still choose either the aforementioned, they may add this, but seriously who the hell is gonna pack this in place of a SAK or MT and consider themselves prepared??
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Hey Tosh!

I disagree... take the box away, and you’ve got a compact and functional one-piece tool that can easily and unnoticeably be carried and deployed in that unfortunate event there is no hatchet or axe available.

Even those who consider the AXEM a novelty item should see it’s potential. One requirement I have for any piece of gear, which this meets, is Functionality.

Honestly, I originally thought that Tosh was correct and couldn't really consider who would benefit from this tool.  I figured it was just a gadget that came out near Christmas so that people would buy it for someone else who hikes and camps because they think it would be really useful when in fact it was another cheapo thing that would live out it's entire life in a drawer, completely forgotten about.

Now that I have it in hand and see that it is remarkably well made and actually functional, I am inclined to keep it in my Maxpedition Sitka, my most used outdoors bag, because it would be a great "just in case" tool.  While I don't imagine I will ever need it, it is light, takes up no actual space, and I know it can do the job if I need it to.  It's like insurance- you have it, you will probably never need it, but if you do, you are glad it's there.  The fact that it can do the job, and easier and more effectively than I thought it would makes all the difference in the world in my mind.

This touches on another subject I mentioned earlier that I want to clarify further.  The box is marked Made in China, which I will admit, really turned me off as well.  I've had my share of cheap junk from China and I find that many of them have malformed saws and bad steel.  That doesn't seem to be the case with this one, and the Made in China label is only there to satisfy Italian law, which seems more restrictive than California law with regards to the origins of a product.

As per Vincenzo, CEO of Steel Life:

Quote
Basically in China we got only the raw material (steel, o-rings).
We have a company in Spain that makes the satin finish.
The rest is made in Italy.

He goes on to say that their plan is to manufacture these 100% in Italy in the next year or so. I hate that they have to mark it as a China made tool, and I hope that doesn't end up hurting them.

Hey sawman

That's fair enough, each to their own.
But, if were stopped and searched here in the UK and the police found me to be carrying  a SAK , especially a keyring SAK I suspect nothing much happen. However if the plod searched my wallet and found this tucked away....what is potentially a concealed weapon, I figure I would have some explaining to do, also suspect I would be relieved of it too.

I can't comment on UK law, but I am quite certain that even a discount, late night TV lawyer would be able to convince a judge and/or jury that this is not much of a weapon.

I also can't imagine a police officer even wasting his or her time trying to build a case that this was a weapon, unless it was covered in blood and there were a number of recent axe/saw/wrench murders in the area.

But that's just me.  I have to wonder if an incomplete, unassembled weapon could really be considered a threat?

Knife law is incredibly strict here in the UK. It transpires that London has now overtaken New York for murder!!
Unless you can actually justify carrying a weapon, be it a MT, SAK  you are at the officers discretion if they wish to seize it.

I honestly do think the AXEM is borderline here and I'm pretty certain if you were searched in London and found carrying this in a public area/transport/football match or whatever the police would take action.
My partner has said many times that even a keyring SAK in her workplace is not allowed, it is classed as a offensive weapon and is a dismissible offence.

I’m not disputing the murder rates or perceived weapons laws here nor there...

But it seems we’ve gotten off topic (imagine that).

I also took the liberty of googling " police tackle knife crime" and it seems almost all cities and counties here in the UK are clamping down hard on persons carrying knives or perceived offensive weapons.

Not to detract or anything, but that was for 2 months.
And NY is 10x less than it used to be 30 years ago.

Anyway, we are badly off topic!  :b2t:
I am open to continuing via PM.

If you are in the market for an emergency tool that can be made into a small axe, this certainly is a cheaper option over any of the Klecker Klax tools, and it comes even with few features the Klax does not offer.

If I wouldn't have had a tomahawk, I would considered this.

BTW: is that spear point arrow chisel or V ground?

It is a chisel grind, flat on the opposite side.

Regarding the legality (or otherwise) of carrying it into downtown London on a busy Saturday night, well, I have to say that I really see no reason why you would want to.  As I said, this is more of a survival or emergency tool than an EDC tool.  Leave it with your hiking and camping stuff, or in a first aid kit in the car or something.  I doubt even the most paranoid police officer wold get upset with you hiking in the woods with half an axe.

European members that purchased the AXEM 4.0 tools will have to wait.  I have been given this shipping quote for each of you:

Quote
United Kingdom  --> € 25

€25 to post inside the EU? is it packed in a lead box?

Yeah, it was a shock to me too, but then so was the postage cost for the entire batch to get to me.  It is almost cheaper for me to go to Italy and pick them up myself.  The Italian Post Office is an expensive one, which makes sense because it is such a big country!

Shouldn't be too much longer now.  Canada Post is on strike, so there may have been some hold ups in the beginning but once it got out of Canada it should be smooth sailing.
