If I had a million dollars....

You just won exactly 1M after taxes. What would you realistically do?

I’d pay off my truck immediately

Pay off my parent’s home

Buy a house on some land and lakefront access

Buy a bass boat and a golf membership

Nice bottle of scotch or two to celebrate

Maybe a couple more small toys

Away the rest of it goes into a retirement account.

Buy the old Homeplace, put half into savings, prepay for law school and build a huge garage to house my woodworking tools and Plierench collection!  :D

Quoting myself here. It would probably be smarter to start off paying parents house off and truck off, buy my house when market is right, then put it in an account that pays interest for a couple years, buy my toys with that interest then move it to a retirement account.

I'm with you on the house on the lake, in either craftsman or lakefront chalet style for me.

And a good truck. Mine would be a big old Chevy Blazer like sheriff Brody in Jaws.

That amount theoretically left over goes to retirement.

Not to look that gift horse in the mouth bit...Problem is, where I work, I'd need the whole million to buy a house. Where I currently live, I could get a house for maybe half a mil. A bit further away from the city, if I take my time and look for the right place in the country, with a barn and a little land, I might might might find one for 200k

Around where I would look would probably be in the 300s. I am guesstimating though, as I don’t have a million dollars.

OMG we would be set!
We’d pay off this house, buy a tiny house and find a small plot of land to sit it on, set a little $$ aside for each kid, give each kid a little to spend on something they might want, of course spend a little ourselves on things we want, I’d have to get some sak’s, maybe a few watches, but other then that hire a driver, this way when ever we want to go somewhere just go, rather then waiting or figuring out how to go somewhere!

....I’d pay off any remaining student loans and whatever my parents owe.

Then buy a nice house and an SUV, likely a Toyota Land Cruiser, and invest further in my business

A million dollars isn't really a lot nowadays.  More than 1/3 of it would be gone just paying off my house, then another $100k fixing it up properly and paying down other bills.

So, realistically, the question is what would I do with half a million, because the first half is pretty much blown immediately!

The other half would probably be invested somehow, although I'd probably take $20k or so and get myself a decent motorhome or something and spend some time traveling, at least around NA, Australia and Europe.  It would be nice to meet many of you and see some cool places that I wouldn't see otherwise.

The old adage says the first million is the most difficult. With that in mind and assuming the authors mean that you should immediately invest the lot, this is the way one should go, in order to ammass further untold zillions.

I'd start with investing a chunk.  I'd set aside college money for my youngest.  I'd forgive a few loans I have extended.  I'd make a few upgrades to my home.  Not much I want or need  :dunno:

pay the rest of my tuition, get a house and set up a rudimentary home gym (bar, plates, platform, pull up bar, squat stand) and maybe a car. the rest goes into savings

A million bucks will always be better than a kick in the teeth. I'd buy a small house with a garden just outside of town and do as little 'work' as possible. Grow as much food as poss and try and get as much off grid as I can.

A space station is a great idea, but with only a million bucks you'd have to either make it yourself or buy one of those dodgy knockoffs

I already have an underwater base. I may spend some cash upgrading the cloaking device though.

I think I saw a space station on AliExpress that got good reviews... ...or I was thinking of asking the bloke who emailed me the other day saying that, he is the king of some country in Africa and he is looking for a business partner to help him get 140 million dollars out of the country and I would get a 50% share.....All I have to do is send him all my accounts information and savings....sounds like a solid and genuine feller, right?

....I wonder if I offer to send him a million dollars, if he could build me a space station for that? ...and get into space and everything.  :think:


By the way, do they serve cake at your underwater base?

Million bucks is not all that much these days so I suppose I couldn't go all crazy (though it is still more than I am likely to make in my whole life).

So a house of my own does not sound to stupid.

Maybe I would quit my job an go to study physics. I always wondered if I would find it more interesting than what I do now. Though if I know myself at all, I would grow bored of that too.  :facepalm:
