Day 11 :

A fun day today. A buddy and I went looking for elk up in the mountains. It snowed a couple days ago, and we hoped that the snow would reveal where the elk were hiding.

Once again we drove up a jeep trail and then found a 'trail' back up into the mountains:

A cold day, with occasional flurries. I was dressed fairly lightly, but still worked up a sweat climbing up these little mountains:

While hiking, I felt pretty good, but when we stopped for a while, the cold wind chilled me down quickly.

We found a lot of tracks, mostly deer, fox, coyote, rabbit, and squirrel. Some field mouse tracks, too.  Eventually we did find a solitary elk track, but there was no other sign of elk in this area. We were both pretty surprised not to find more elk sign here.

As a scouting trip we were a bit disappointed. But as a nice day hike, it was great. It's hard not to feel grateful when I get to spend a day up in the mountains, even a cold day, with views like this:
