eBay jail
on: September 23, 2018, 10:50:51 AM
The UK Drought.

Just a quick question to other UK based collectors; is there any source of older model SAK’s other than local car boot sales / antique shops?

Recently seen a nice 1963 Soldier model on eBay (from Austria).  Ok I know we can not sell / advertise knives on the UK eBay, but I didn’t realise we can not bid on knives advertised outside the UK.  I tried messaging the seller, by eBay has blocked my messages as it is considered trying to get round their UK policy.

Any other sources I can try?

You could try Shpock, I've bought a few items off there!

Next time try logging on to ebay.com (or some other country ebay) and see if that gets around the ebay.co.uk "knife" restrictions.

Another possibility is to get the seller to do another listing as a "camping tool" and see if that allows you to buy (I had an idea it is anything with "knife" in the description that triggers the restriction).

Replacing the "co.uk" by ".com" or ".fr" in the URL should work just fine ;-) In France we also have restrictions (sometines I can understand, even clothes are blocked, lol) and using the ".com" allow us to see blocked items.

Ebay wont let you get round the restriction by logging into another version the restriction will hit you when you try and ship the item to the UK

It does indeed suck I've lost out on more than one 84mm Golfer because of it

You could try etsy - I've not managed to bag a SAK off there but I've bought a few old tradititonals off there

also there are other forums - not sure direct links are allowed?

You can’t get around the restriction even if logged onto .com .it .de or anywhere. As soon as you place a bid, the restriction pops up. Only way around I have found is to look at sellers other items. Find something that isn’t a knife, contact them and ask them to add the category “collectibles” or “tools” to the item you are interested in. This has worked for me for a couple of SAKs.

The member in question is Jaydar. He’s a great guy, and he prices his knives very fairly.

Coincidentally, he’s the gentleman who sold me my own birthyear (1963) Soldier.

I was recently trying to sell a Yeoman on eBay but my listing was removed.

It is now on Shpock (mobile app), which seems actually to have a lot of SAKs listed.

There seem to be some very odd prices for Vics on Shpock

The majority of SAKs on Shpock in the UK are from one seller who appears to have picked up a large joblot from an airport auction. Unfortunately he will not post so unless you are local to him, they are just as out of reach as the SAKs on eBay.

Yes, some very odd ott prices too, I did however just pick up a Wenger champ for £15.

Can't sell a knife in the UK version of the 'bay, but apparently you can sell your girlfriend for 120,000. Surprised they even allowed the listing.

Although Ebay's policy is not to sell Victorinox knives through Ebay UK, it does happen. I live in the UK - Scotland to be exact and I have regularly bought Victorinox knives on Ebay UK.

I've purchased from sellers in France, Japan, Italy and Spain - all recently and through Ebay UK. Weirdly though, if you are UK based and you try to sell a Victorinox knife, this is not permitted and your ad will be removed. Likewise, sometimes you can't even purchase certain Victorinox as you'll be greated with the "you are trying to circumvent Ebay rules" message.

It seems to be the category that the seller lists the item against. For example, I was trying to purchase 58mm Cellidor scales last month from a Seller. EBay wouldn't allow me to purchase, informing me that I can't buy dangerous knives living in the UK. I emailed the Seller and they re-classified the listing of the Ebay ad, thus finally allowing me to purchase the scales.

Gumtree is good to. Amazon UK is more than happy to sell all Victorinox knives, as is Victorinox own website. There's Facebook groups which allow users to buy and sell too. Not to mention the many outdoor shops and retailers in Scotland, etc.

Amazon UK won’t ship SAKs, other knives, glue, and many other uncountable things to the Republic of Ireland anymore.
That’s in addition to the eBay knife restrictions applying to us too...

That glue restrictions isn’t surprising! They will sniff Freon into a bag and sniff it.

I know, but thanks.
We use parcel motel. It’s just that the added step of having to use it makes me try buying stuff from another website rather than try to deal with amazon.  ;)

I just put that there off the top of my head as one of the things that amazon won’t ship. Since that ‘not permitted’ list includes things like Zebra pens, I don’t think that glue is being singled out.
It wouldn’t be as annoying if EVERYTHING on Amazon wouldn’t ship to Ireland. But as it is, I keep coming across things that ought to be shippable to Ireland but aren’t, and things that shouldn’t be shippable but are, it’s the inconsistency that gets me.  :poh:

So, maybe a bit OT, but I was just watching the new episode of one of my favorite TV Shows ever, Doctor Who.
New season, new Doctor. :woohoo: All was OK so far until this scene:

man, I used to love (and still like) Doctor Who   :dunno:
but it just lost a few points for me after this.  >:( For one, I don't really like the new Doctor, and then there was this dialog...

Doctor: (Fabricates new Sonic Screwdriver from scratch)
Man: "Did you just make that? (referring to the device)"
Doctor: "Sonic screwdriver, well I say screwdriver but it's more multi-purpose than that:
scanner, diagnostics, tin opener...more of a "sonic Swiss Army Knife" only without the knife, only idiots carry knives"

so, as a loyal follower and fan for many years and many different doctors (favorite was Tennant),
all that I have left to say what the
Show content
BBC? ???, please:

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

This is where I'd probably end up sending an email. Complete losers do it to complain about the most trivial things, so why not us?.  Here in the US, there's so much of that promotion of certain politics and social issues that goes on with our stuff, I barely even watch TV these days.
Of course, I really don't even watch BBC America ever since the Clarkson got fired, and Hammond and May quit Top Gear and went on to do their own show.
