Yes, I guess it is a tolerance/variance thing, I guess they are like a box of chocolate, you quite never know what you are getting until it is in your hand.
Most likely, because the pin wasn't supported by the other side of the handle slab, it was able to move more than when the knife was assembled.The plastic handles I think would be injection molded and should be more uniform, but the wooden handles just cut out and drilled. A jig is likely to be used, but if it isn't made of hardened steel then tolerance could creep over time as it wears. CNC would be another option for cutting out and drilling the holes which could improve accuracy. I'm also assuming that the blade blanks are punched out of flat stock in a press with punch and die, and small variances between blades could occur over time.Anyway, you fixed it simply, good stuff
