According to Wikipedia briar is the wood of choice for tobacco pipes. As it is supposedly quite dense the pipe made of it might also work well as an impromptu gavel for the times when desk banging must be particularly intense.

Also how heavy do we intend to go on innuendo in characters dialogue?

I'm thinking 1950's English Seaside postcard. Clearly my budding starlets plan to go heavy on the cheeky ad-libs.
