M*A*S*H identification
on: September 25, 2018, 07:32:25 AM
Hey all... I just got to remembering that BJ Hunnicutt in M*A*S*H had a swiss army knife in several episodes. Not all the time, but I specifically remember him using the file to dull the needle on Winchester's record player. Any other fans of the show out there? And do any of you remember enough to nail down the model? I remember it being pretty thick, definitely 4+ layers.  :pok:

did he also use it to trim his mustache? this might be the reason why I have to rewatch the whole series again

They briefly show it in episode Pressure Points.  Charles has used it to cut an onion.

Can’t get any good pics or info...

Season 11 episode 13 is the bit I reference about the record player needle. I recall the onion bit too!

Pressure points was a part of season 10 which ran in 1981 and 1982. So now all we need is to find a 4 layer model with a file that was available at that time, or perhaps better in 1980 to 1981

Could have been a Grand Prix back then too.

forgot to mention that possibility. it is probably a bit too odd to expect them to use a period accurate SAK which would place the possible model between 1950 and 1953

But he was concerned about it rusting, something that would only be a concern pre 51.

Did the metal file exist pre-51? Per this resource from the SAK dating and identification thread... I'm not sure. http://victorinox.metodi.me/91mmtools.php#metalfile

Or it could be a cheap import since this was filmed in California.

props are props but can't we hope that he had the real thing? MacGyver ran a few years later and they had the real thing but the problem is that it was also a crucial part of his character

Tossing around thoughts is fun at least. If we can determine every time it was seen and the functions performed, we can at leas narrow down to a list of possibles. Maybe then do a poll to decide which of the possibilities we hope it would have been!

Could it be that it's actually the army "demo" knife?

I saw it briefly and it was red. I assume that was a SAK.

If it was red then that rules out the Scout Utility or Demo knife, as far as I know they were never made in colors.
