I was looking at a traveler lite recently, but was thinking about all of the electronic features. Every one of them can be had or duplicated on your phone. Everyone has a smartphone now, and many batteries last all day if not multiple days. Also, the scales are not waterproof, and banging them around could theoretically ruin them.

Yes, probably. They were always a bit of a compromise weren't they? not that rugged.

Smart phones have rendered a lot redundant or pointless.  I forget which model I have of the SAKs with electronics.  Its neat but thats about it.

No! Go outside a coverage area it’s useless. Towers go down, its useless. Solar flares hit, its useless. I never give up old school, for new. The electronic scales are independent and not tied into a support system like a cell phone.

Ray, your phone's internal presure, temp, gps sensors work without reception.

A solar flare would also destroy your electronic SAK scales...

Yup!

Your phone has an X Y Z sensor and a magnetic field sensor that can detect the earth poles too.

Well maybe not YOUR phone, but the average smartphone has.

You just need an app/apps to acces the data from these sensors.

Think standalone GPS. Newer ones I dun know. The older models never need to connect to any network.

So...we don’t need the satellites anymore for gps???

My phone has an internal GPS antenna and is about 2.5 years old.

No satellites either after a solar flare big enough to fry your phone or stand alone gps

Map and compass ftw  :D

X Y Z sensor means it can sense acceleration in any direction "in space" but no location.

The magnetic sensor senses like a compass. The GPS antenna senses the GPS satelites and determines your position on earth.

That’s what I was thinking...the phone gps went thru the tower to satellite. The standalone gps hit the satellites directly.

Many watches also have ABC features.   :pok:  Dont' need to rely on a smart phone.

Oh, so the gps antenna is in the phones? Am I understanding this right? Hang in there with me...thanks

To recap: a phone is able to download maps for offline use, so it doesn’t need a cellular connection if you download the maps.
And a phone connects straight to the gps satellites with its own antenna, so it doesn’t need cellular connection for that either.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

You may not need maps (on or offline) to know where you are, but a lat/long coordinate on its own may not be much use to you.
AGPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) uses the phone network and the GPS network together to get a faster position fix.
