Blade play developed on my Surge
on: September 26, 2018, 01:16:09 AM
I have done wood carving with main blade on the Surge. It worked very well slicing hard wood, and peeling them. The wood was cherry wood.

After about 30 minutes carving and peeling the cherry, I checked the blade of Surge, and it seems developed slight blade play back to front. It was solid before.

Should I tighten the blade, or would you just leave it as is? Is this normal thing? I have had the Surge only for about a month now.

The serrated blade on the Surge is still solid without play. But then I haven't used it for anything real work as such yet.

Wouldn't hurt to try and tighten it up if you have the tools to do it.

I wouldn't worry about it, unless it is causing the liner lock to buckle and fail.

I recommend to tighten screws, its annoying when blade play is present especially when carving. You could allways open screws and add drop of soft lock on screw and then add it back to wanted tighness and let it dry few hours to get best result.
On my Surge there was loose screws what caused blades to go loose so i added fee drops of soft lock to screws and since that blades are feeling solid and doesnt play anymore

I gotta wonder if this will reoccur if you carve hard wood again. But I guess there is only 1 way to find out unfortunately.
Or maybe fortunately, as Leatherman has excellent warranty and a well used tool is awesomer than a brand new one. 👍

I was looking at the driver bits from Leatherman, and there are about 40 screw driver bits in there, but there was none that fits to tighten?  I think it is Star shaped screw, but it also has horn shaped thing is in the middle of the Star shaped screw.

I think I have the star shaped driver bits, but it won't work with tightening the LM main blade due to this feature in the LM screw?

Where could I get the bits? And what do they get called?

Unfortunately it does not come with the bits from Leatherman. They are called security torx bits and you will need to buy 2 of them to tighten...Its just a normal Torx head with a hole in the centre

Wow, I didn't know there are these bits. I thought I had most of them from my Makita screw driver bit kit. But even in there, they aren't there.

So I must buy the security bit set - more expenditure. :(

Thanks for your info. :)  :tu: :hatsoff:

My experience with security bits is they can strip easily if you buy cheap🤕

Yes I know what you mean. But I cannot spend for the top professional ones, as they cost too high.
Draper is kinda middle class one, and I think I will go for the set.

I mean I use the torx screwdriver on one side and a torx bit on the other. The torx screwdriver was less expensive than buying a second security bit set for just one torx bit.

oh I see. Makes sense.

Here is a video by a Youtuber about his LM Surge having blade play, and how it is fixed.

I think my Surge was perfect when it arrived, but the main blade got loose when it was used for carving hard wood for 30 minutes. Weird.

That looks good enough for the job, bargain too.  But I have already ordered 2x sets security bit set. Not high end one, but slightly better than low end one.

They arrived this morning, and I managed to tighten the Surge main blade. It worked fine. Now it is rock solid, but then it got very stiff when taking out the blade and closing.

It will get smoother through time I would imagine.

Use loctite. Otherwise opening/shutting outside tools can loosen/tighten the pivot to annoying levels.

I have dropped a tiny squirt of WD40, and it is a lot better the now in closing and opening is smoother already.

Not sure if mixing WD40 and lube would be OK on the pivots?

The main blade is rock solid, no hint of any type of play once opened.  But it is definitely stiffened when opening and closing.

WD40 definitely is helping loosening up, but seems will take time.

Did some wood processing in the garden, and Surge worked well.

The security drive bit set did good job, but it won't have much use because only security screws we have is on the Surges.

WD isn't a great lube, try some 3in1 or plain mineral oil.

Regarding the T10 security torx bit, Wiha is the brand to go. I have a set of US-made bits that are buttery soft. Cheaply made bits don't last and can ruin your screws. The Germans make bits right.
