The Rebar is one of the most popular tools from leatherman, and after carrying a wave for several years, i bought one too!

But to see what makes it so popular, i am challenging myself (and you!) to wear it for 30 days, and try to use every tool of it as much as possible to get the jobs done.

This challenge will be run using standard challenge rules, enriched for goodness: (almost shameless copy form the september storm)

1.  Carry a Rebar for 30-days. It doesn’t have to be the same Rebar everyday, but it has to be a real Leatherman Rebar.
Modded Rebars welcome.  Cheap copies, not so much.

2.  Try to use every tool in the Rebar’s ample tool set at least once. Let’s test the Rebar and it’s bits a bit.

3.  Post a fresh photo of your Rebar every day. Action photos appreciated, awlways.

4.  Post up insights, memories, and Rebar stories as you are able.
How are those wire cutters holding up? How often does that knife need resharpening? Will that saw really cut through a rock ?

5.  A final summary at the end of the challenge is always appreciated. How does the Rebar stack up against your beloved Spirit or Surge or Wave or……nail clippers? Give the MTo community an honest and frank assessment. Did the Rebar live up to it’s popular reputation?

The challenge starts 01 October 2018, local time, and will wrap up 30 October 2018.

Because the challenge is expected to involve a large number of MTo members, to make it easier on the mods to award the new badges en masse, all participants must start 01 october and finish 30 october. (That’s why we’re announcing the challenge well in advance.)

With so many Rebar fans here, and a lovely early Fall, (or summer for those who are upside down) start time, I think we can get a big turn out for this challenge. This could be one of the most epic challenges ever.

So get your Rebars out, get ‘em cleaned up, get ‘em oiled up, get ‘em sharpened up!

Lets get Re-Barred!

Reply #2 on: September 26, 2018, 03:16:25 PM
I truly hope after the september storm wave challenge, many of you will accompany me in my challenge, i am very curious how the rebar will hold up against my beloved wave, that i have been carrying for many years now.

As for myself it will become a big challenge to keep up and keep taking posting pictures during the last week of october, but i am tryting to keep the reason therefore a bit of a secret for a surpirse Hopefully it will work out

As an early starter, ill post my current rebar set-up that i will be carrying during october.

I carry my modded rebar everyday already as it is

For me it is a shame that it will be in october as I will be on a business trip for 10 days in october, where I likely won't have internet access for the most part.
Kind regards,

@MMR , No problem with that, you can always take the picture and post m later, as soon as you will have internet again. as long as you keep m daily numbered that won't be such a problem i suppose. There was a guy in the september storm too who went on a hike for a few days, and posted when he could again.

I also had 2 very very busy days last month i took a pic o those days but had no more time to make a posting that day, but did that as soon as possible the next day.

I do recall reading that one challenge at a time will be awarded for the period, yet you can participate in both.

I already have a 30 day REBAR badge, learning during that time the REBAR is best suited to my needs.

Followed a previous Spirit challenge, and really fell for SteveC's black tool and pictures shared by all, yet could not justified buying one when I enjoyed the Rebar and ST300 and WAVE for my carry needs.

The REBAR challenge is worth doing if you have a REBAR and have not tested it in your world's activities.

I did and lead me to have these 3, plus a Heritage model still in package.  The SS was the challenge EDC.

Having done the Spirit challenge I give the nod to the Rebar as being a better all around tool.

Having also done Swisstool, Surge, Spirit, Rebar and now Wave Challenges almost back to back I find it interesting we are on such dirrerent sides of the spectrum Steve. I found the the Rebar (and the Wave for that matter) a good, capable tool, but am very excited to be going back to the Spirit.  The OG Wave stared me on my multi tool journey and for that it will always hold a special place,   For me though the Swisstool family have captivated my my heart as MTs go.  I continue to try other tools in order to better understand the preferances of others and broaden my horizons (the Surge comes in very close to my ST's).  For me the upcoming Spirit Challenge will be almost like getting to spend a month at Disney World for free.   Don't get me wrong there are two things about the Swisstool family that Vic' realy should look into.  First a bit driver system and secondly one hand opening of the knife blades.  The Surge and Wave slaughter Vic on both of those, and it was the OHO that kept me coming back to the Wave even after I broke the first two.  It was the third broken Wave that made me move on.  I realy was affraid I wouldn't like the Vic's offering for the very reason of no OHO but well I've been carring one form or another now for over 20 years.  For me it wasn't that bad learning to adjust to the nail nicks. To be honest the "ALL outside opening tools" is the main thing that keeps me coming back.  The quality of the Leathermans is not a problem for me especialy with the newer generations of the Wave (they beefed up the material around the Liner locks on the handles.  That's were all three of my OG's broke).  I just find accessing the inside tools "fiddley" for lack of a better term to describe opening the pliars when I need scissors or a screw driver etc...
Well I guess I should probably stop rambling now.  Please forgive me I went to the Doctor today for a throat/chest infection and am a little high on meds right now.  realy wish I could sleep, but maybe that too is over-rated. :dunno:

Well Antti, i am very interested in how the spirit holds up to a rebar, especially for the price difference, a rebar is definately a significant bit cheaper over here.(the spirit is almost 25% more expensive than a rebar here afaik)

but it is good to be not alone in my journey, so i made a little list already.
if you want to add yourselves, please copy the list and add yourselves to it :)

Lan Wolf,
Please don't take my rambling the wrong way.  You are about to undertake a very worthy journey with an equally worthy companion.  The Rebar is a very capable tool and dose offer some options that no SwissTool comes close to.  Something I would have never admitted to if I had not done the challenge myself.
Good Journey My friends... :hatsoff:

Not a bad challenge. I have always been a Wave man and seldom carried the Rebar . This is mainly because I got my first Wave in '98 so by the time the Rebar came out the Wave and tools were second nature to my hands.
I hopefully will get my first forum badge for the Wave challenge and I thought it would look lonely so adding a second straight away should be good .
Bring on October !! Octoberfest  time or should that be Rebar-fest time ?

@Douglas,
i had not yet seen your post before i posted, i was little slow typing due other acivities requiring my attention too.
As for the one hand opening tools, i can agree that i like that very much on the wave too, and my OHT even has OHT pliers
But ... it makes tools a bit bigger, and in some occasions oho tools are not allowed to be carried or it is jsut better not to.
I really like the smaller format of the Rebar, and i want to see if i can get by with it in stead of my Wave.
But i also stopped carrieing a seperate knife when i got my wave, beacuse it coud deploy a knife as easy as.

I travel to germany serveral times a year, and in some ocasions i was thankful i did not forget to leave the wave at home.
(when i went to visit the Reichstag in Berlin a few years back, i was held by 4 security guards, beacuse the alarm went off,
i forgot to take a package of tobaco out of my jeans backpocket!  If i had carried a wave that time, i might have been arrested too)

@Pauldmmwc
Well for sure, i hope it wil be a Fest carrying and using the Rebar!
but wouldnt carry a rebar to an octoberfest...
Iĺl count you in !

I find it truely a sad state of afairs that so many good upstanding poeple must suffer for the irresonsibility of a few.  The Challenge so many on this forum face is completly forign to me.  Or laws here do differ from state to state and even city to city.  For the most part most people look stangely at man that dose not at least carry a slip joint pocket knife.  Locking blade OHO folders may be even more common.  Multi tools are every where and often a great way to start up conversation with a stranger, soon to be friend.  I hope the Rebar suits your needs well.  I pray also that some day a knife will once again be seen and used universally as a tool.  Not a weapon used by a few that ruin lifes simple pleasure for the rest of us.

Without intending to hijack this thread...Forgive my ignorance, LanWolf, but I am puzzled as to why one would be held at Reichstag for having a package of tobacco in one's pocket? Was the packaging itself of a semi-metallic nature and therefore set off the alarm? Are there smell sensors for anything that can burn? Or are they checking for tobacco now as well?

Like Douglas, I was about to lament the knife restrictions you encounter, but then was hit by the tobacco remark and thought, what could be less innocuous as that.

I admit we are fortunate here. Yes we often are restricted, for example, there is a no weapons including knives rule when going to the Statue of Liberty, schools, and places like that. However, a tradesman can leave the job site to go to lunch without having to remove his toolbelt and knives. I can carry a Leatherman Rebar almost anywhere I want, with the above exceptions in mind.

A Buck 110 in a leather sheath would certainly be questioned at work (I work in a High School), but I quietly keep a Swiss army knife in my pocket and have never been questioned with a Leatherman PSTII or Rebar in a sheath on my belt. I just don't push it, and I make sure there are no one-hand open blades on my person. But out on the street, swiss army and Leatherman are a full GO here.

Good luck with the Rebar challenge. I got mine just over a year ago and I haven't stopped carrying it yet. Perfect size to tool ratio and it does not frighten anyone with one hand open blades.

It would take something very special indeed to ween me off of the Leatherman Rebar!

@ThundahBeagle
I really have no clue what set off the security gate alarm, but i suppose there can be 2 options:

 - the package contained something that is metallic (most likely, altough is was not a package of cigarettes with its metallic foil, but regular tobacco for rolling your own )
 - there is a check on density of things like in a luggage X-ray, and of course tobaco has a different density(also moistureness) than anything on a human body.

(after i handed the tobaco to a guard and went through the gate again it did not sound again, and i was given back the tobaco)

It is a Coyote Brown, cerakote finish that is now listed on LM's web site.  But I found mine at a Cabela's a year ago at a reasonable discount, one I could not walk away from here and still be a MTO member.  Also found a Style in similar finish.

In the future I made need to include a Warning when including a picture.  Be careful as I recall Poncho also has one. :multi: :salute: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I'd like to join, but there are two reasons I won't be. 1. I recently did a Rebar challenge. 2. I really need to get my Surge back on my belt after the Rebar and Wave(currently) challenges.  :ahhh

I will be watching to see how it goes though and hope anyone who joins in has a good experience.
