Angle on Powerlock Knife Blade
on: February 23, 2007, 05:13:25 PM
I picked up a used Powerlock with oxide finish.  I noticed the blade (chisel grind, no serrations) has different angles from base to point.  I'm slowly trying to even the edge, but am now wondering if this was purposeful for some strength or reliability reason, or just sloppy factory work.  Most of the oxide was still on the blade edge, so I'm pretty sure the original owner didn't re-profile the blade.

Any ideas?   ???

Chap

Weird. Mine is the same way. The edge is blunter near the base of the blade, then the angle slowly becomes shallower out near the tip.

It looks like this is only on the non-serrated blades. I don't know why.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

My chisel grind blade is the same as your guys. I thought it was just a factory mistake but it's now looking like it is something SOG  purposely does.

That'd be it.  Any reason for this to be done that anyone can put their finger on?

I bought my S44 on Ebay with a non-standard blade configuration so I thought it was a fluke.  Otherwise I would have mentioned it my review.

That bevel would be a pain to sharpen so I'll grind a new bevel on the blade.

Are the double bevel blades normal?

The Chisel grind on my SOG seems to be just fine.  I had to check after reading this thread.  It does not seem to be weird at all.

I spoke to SOG customer service about the grind on the plain edge.  SOG only offers a double ground plain edge.  The chisel grind is only available on serrated and combo blades.  The customer service representative didn't know if a chisel ground plain edge was available in the past.  I'm guessing that the tools with the weird grind are either quite old or possibly contract tools.  The customer service representative was surprised to hear about the uneven grind and assured me that the double ground plain edge blade has a "professional" even grind.
