How short do you have your nails? Because with proper technique I find that you can open them unless your nails are short to the point you've seriously damaged them. Just hook your nail to pointing towards it bottom and simultaneously gently press the back of your nail on the tool, you should get a firm grip, and your nail is only pressed downwards, which even a short and weak nail can take.

Hi Garth. My nails are always kept at a normal length, but I burst a nail - it split towards my finger (ie: right down the middle) when I was working and it was catching on everything. T'was quite painful reaching into my pocket for my keys and the nail would catch on my trousers. Hence, I had no choice but to cut it back as far as I could to remove the damaged part of nail.

So yeah, it ended up being very short, but 3 days later and just enough had grown back for me to be able to just open my Vic's blade.

I fail to see the difficulty here.

You need to use a thumbnail. So.... you must know someone who doesn't need one of their thumbs. Borrow it, use the nail, treat it like rental property. When yours is back in proper shape, give it back.

Little duct tape, maybe some superglue, he'll be fine.

You need a tool to extract the thumb first.

May I suggest something like the Delémont Evolution Cigar 79?

And then you can reattach it with duct tape!

That's unerstandable, just saying that with proper tecnique you can do it with any nail you that's not outright broken.
