Project gear repair kit (RipSpool inspired)
on: October 01, 2018, 02:09:22 PM
Those who have seen the full breakdown of my EDC know I carry both a sewing kit and a small spool of duck tape with me. Naturaly when I saw ExoTac's RipSpool I wanted one...then I saw the price. Yes ExoTac does some fine machining but 35usd for a turned aluminium spool with an intearnal compartment for a sail needle is more than I am willing to spend. Dont get me wrong, I had it in my cart a few times but just couldnt click "checkout".
Eventually I remembered the old "egg" or matchsafe sewing kits and realized this was just a new take...and that I had the stuff hanging around.

-The matchsafe is unbranded from one of those China direct sellers
-The bobins are from an old sewing machine I no longer have (they dont fit ether of my current machines)
-The tube is the strait bottom of a loopy straw from the party suplies section (it is a hard plastic) with 1 end melted shut
-The cap is the head of a framing nail that fit snug inside the straw
-Add some tape, heavy dacron thread, 8lb monofilament, and both regular & sail needles to finish it off

In the end it is a little bigger than the RipSpool but seems to hold more tape and thread than they claim plus fishing line. It isnt as convenient having to open it, but at the same time all my materials are protected. The best part is the only thing I didnt allready have was the loopy straws.

In all honesty if I had the extra cash I would not think twice about buying the RipSpool...but that is not the case. So I built the next best thing, an accessory that does the same thing using what I allready have
(RipSpool pic is from Battlebox)

Thats a clever alternative, well done.   :salute:.  I'm using the fold over a card method for keeping my duct tape within gear.  I may have to take a page from you  :like:

Nice one.
I use to have a gutted quark mini aa, wonder if that is still around here somewhere?
Or perhaps a pill container.

On hikes I carry a small fixing kit, too.
Mine consists of an old camera film canister wrapped with tape, inside a small sewing kit from a hotel, half a meter .7mm wire, 2 small zipties and as much 2mm cord as fits into the canister.
Lately I added a small box of seamgrip repair kit for fixing bags and tents (cant glue those siliconized nylon...)
Was quite happy with that.

Can fix everything from broken shoelace, backpack straps, tents, matrasses, bike tyres.... :like:
