Action on scissors kind of rough feeling
on: October 01, 2018, 10:08:12 PM
I have a couple SAKs with scissors where the action on them is kind of rough feeling or not as smooth as I like. Some also don't open as wide after the spring decompresses despite the springs having the same shape as others. Adding oil at the rivet and edges doesn't seem to help. I'm wondering if the rivet is tighter than usual or if there burrs on the edges or if a new spring could help. Can anything be done? (Of course, this isn't a real issue since the scissors still cut.)

If washing the pivot with lots of warm soapy water and then a good oiling doesn’t work, then the scissors probably need a sharpening.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Was this a new or used SAK? I've noticed some used SAKs will have rough scissor action due to damage from cutting wire and certain types of fairly hard fishing line.

Main culprits:

Burrs on the edge - usually can be felt with a fingernail, or you can see changes in reflection by shining a light on it. A light - and I do mean light - wipe on a stone should help. Lay the inside faces flat, and don't remove any more than just the burr.

Grit/gunk wedged between the mating faces - clean well, in warm soapy water, and reoil when dry. Might not work immediately, but regular oiling should flush it out. An ultrasonic cleaner might help too.

Tired spring - the best fix for this is replacement of the spring.
