The comics you grew up with / still read as an adult
on: October 02, 2018, 08:27:11 PM
Most of us have the favorite comics we used to read endlessly as kids...

For me it was Donald Duck magazine at first (published since 1952 in Finland, most popular comic ever)
Later on The Phantom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom
And when I got to my teens, I really got into X-Men... I still have a pretty extensive collection ;)

Checked out Spawn at some point...

Years and years later, way into my adult years, I found Hellblazer (and yes, I saw the movie Constantine first)

Leaving some not so family friendly comics out...  :P

Oh and I still love the Donald Duck magazine  :D

Which comics were/are your favorites?

I've long been an Marvel/Avengers fan, long before the films were a thing.  Never was a huge X-Men fan though.  I love 2000AD and also grew up with the second version of the Eagle comic.

We had an excellent tiny comic shop open up in Reading where I grew up. I remember Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean signing all our Hellblazers and Sandman comics on Saturday afternoon and being really patient and kind

No particular order and very incomplete: Donald Duck (similar position in Norway as Finland), Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke, Superman, X-Men (the Claremont years), Spirou and Fantasio, Corto Maltese, The Phantom, Modesty Blaise, anything by Will Eisner...

As an adult, not all of them have kept their appeal, but e.g. Corto Maltese and the Franco-Belgian classics  I doubt I will ever tire of. I'm a big fan of bande dessinée.

“Freefall” is probably at the top of the list.
It’s a tri-weekly comic set an indetermined time in the future on a frontier colony world, kind of a gag-a-day type, with an ongoing storyline and the occasional interesting bit of science (the guy who makes it is a nuclear plant technician).

It’s sloooooow though.  :D I found it a few years ago, but it recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary, with only a few weeks passing by in story time and the first chapter just finished.
On the upside, there is an archive of 3000 strips to surf through.  :ahhh

Someone made a ‘speedreader’ program so you can read through a bunch of strips easily without much clicking, just scrolling:
