What should I "wear" for dinner?
on: October 04, 2018, 04:14:03 PM
So last night I went to a dinner.  I wanted to carry something but was challenged as to what? My Salesman is a super awesome SAK but its more "tool" than I wanted to carry,  if that makes sense.

I was going to bring my Bantom but  :dunno:

I don't have a selection of knives that fall into the category of dinner or gentleman folder category.  I was eyeing my CRKT Toothpick.  Hmm  This looks like a winner.  Elegant and enough blade for dinner.

As I started out my eye went to my Pocket Tool Chest.....   dang it!  Its time to leave already.  No, the PTC is too tooly for dinner.  I've been reading the Executive thread and tho I sent my onto a member I thought the Executive in black would be a great companion.  Yes its tooly but it elegant to me.

I walk back to my array of sharps and spot my Cadet 2.  Hmm,  ok this will do, as I put it in my pocket and head out.

Its a great SAK.  It carried really well and while tooly for my needs I quite liked it.  I will however get an Executive in black but it left me wondering

What do y'all carry on such occasions?  It doesn't need to be SAK.  I'm thinking a nice horn/bone/wood handled traditional would have been sweet.

When I'm wearing a suit I tend to keep to things like the alox bantam or small single bladed knives from the likes of Case, Fantoni or Lionsteel

My Banton is celidor but an Alox one sounds like a contender.  The others are definitely something that would have been great choices.

One of these for me. Can’t lay my hands on the lionsteel at the moment

It depends on the level of pomp and ceremony.

For an evening meal somewhere, it'll just be something reasonably presentable, like a Evowood 14 or stainless Traveller, with maybe something like an IDL T7, but if the evening suit needs to come out, then so does the formal carry

A stainless PTC or Traveller would fill the role, as would my Case Barlow with scrolled bolsters. I think all these three are dressy enough, should I need to reach for a pocket knife - which to be fair is fairly unlikely - but has happened. However, these items don't really go match my pliers tool or watch which will be residing in the waistcoat pockets. As such, the formal gear is a work in progress at the moment.

The plan on the table at the moment, is a modified Executive with a couple of tools from a PTC thrown in for good measure. This will be finished with stag scales and polished brass bolsters, but also have the toothpick and tweezers. I think that should be more in keeping with the other carry.

Thanks Mark :salute: Suit carry is the only time it comes out to play.

Same here; what a beaut.

Who made that?

Edit: Okay, I actually read the text instead of being distracted by the pics this time and I see it's a Case. Disregard the question.

Such wonderful carry options.  It's looking like aesthetics play a role as much as anything.  I actually like the wood SAK option very much.  Now I am regretting not putting the SS Esquire scales on my PTC   .  My little CRKT really could have fit the bill.  I'm happy with my Cadet2 but certainly something "nicer" would be nice.

There are a ton of very classy traditionals out there that could fit in just about anywhere, if you don't need a MT specifically.

A Cadet gets my vote!

Or as a knife only, nothing beats a Laguiole in elegance.

I never think about what to carry if I go out to dinner. What ever traditional I have on me at the time will work just fine.
If I have to wear slacks then I'll carry something smaller like a CSC boys knife.

I usually go with a slim traditional.  This is one example:

The Higo is both a looker and a conversation piece/interesting item to talk about

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

Super pictures fellas.  Lots of great choices.  I felt good at what I carried but looking forward I think my Texas Toothpick could have been a good choice too.  I have another traditional by Buck Creek thats decent.  I've cleaned the forced patina from it but as you can see it still has some on the blade.  I got it used so who knows what life it had.  Both blades are wicked sharp and it has excellent snap ( walk and talk ) for a cheap blade.

I think the SS Esquire looks great as a companion.  I dont think the Cadet will be left at home when a dining out comes around.  Like some of you said, it really depends on the occasion.

Exactly what I was thinking.  I am really liking Wenger again.  My EDC was a Wenger then slowly moved away from them.  I am really liking the Evowood 14 also as a possible contender.  The wood "dresses" up the knife quite nicely IMO.  Your Barlow however  :tu: that would make any occasion festive.
