Day 13 :

I decided to take myself out for lunch today.

So I packed up my Safety Orange daypack and headed for the hills.....

(Image removed from quote.)

It was -4ºC when I started out, but I was dressed in just a long-sleeve Henley shirt and nylon hiking pants. Climbing up into the hills I got sweaty in no time.

I was not hunting, but it is still rifle season. I knew I'd be in some deer and elk country, so a bit of safety gear seemed appropriate. I did come across several sets of deer tracks. Following this set, led to a bedding site:

(Image removed from quote.)

As I approached the bedding site, I spooked out a Mule deer doe. I didn't get to 'shoot' a photo, but it was fun to find her. Here is her bedding site, well located on a sunny slope, and under a tree:

(Image removed from quote.)

Hiking on a bit, I climbed up to a hill top where I had nice view:

(Image removed from quote.)

I hung my pack from a tree to keep it out of the wet and snow.

(Image removed from quote.)

Here's a tip you guys probably already know, but I'll post it up anyway.  I keep a short length of string in my pocket, with a loop at one end. When I stop, it's a simple matter to run the line around a trunk or branch, running the tag end through the loop. With the line now secured to the tree, I tie in a Marline Spike hitch (super simple and quick) and then slip in a tent stake or branch to form a hanger for my pack. This keeps the pack off the damp ground (really important in cold weather, when everything seems to collect moisture) and up at a good working height. The key to this trick is to have the string easily accessible in your pocket; that way you don't have to rummage around in your pack, on the ground, to find the string. The whole hanger is made while the pack is on your back.  :tu:

Marlin Spike Hitch video

Ok, enough of that.  On to lunch:

(Image removed from quote.)

I brought some rice noodles, a peanut butter packet from an old military ration, and my emergency bottle of Tabasco sauce.
(The camo bag is my food bag. I took the leg off an old pair of fatigues and sewed up the open end where the knee was. The ankle end already had a draw string in place to cinch my 'bag' shut. Makes a great bear bag to hang food in trees....unless you can't find it again at breakfast time...... :-\)

Rice noodles are great, but some peanut butter kicks them up to true greatness! And everything in life is better with Tabasco, right?

I brought my little wood burnings stove along to use in cooking. As I got to my lunch spot, I tried collecting some tinder and kindling.

(Image removed from quote.)

The Huntsman got used to make small twigs into smaller twigs and shavings. I put a bandana down to keep the shavings from getting lost, keep them dry (drier, anyway) and making it easier to gather them up.

(Image removed from quote.)

I used a ferro rod to get the fire going. I have to say I really struggled to get a fire going. I don't know if it was the cold or everything was just a bit damp, but it wasn't easy. The thistle tops were the best tinder. They caught a spark quite easily and flamed rah up, but it was tough getting the other materials to catch. I used the Huntsman's saw to cut some sticks into small pieces and collected the sawdust in the bandana. The sawdust plus the thistle tops proved to be the ticket in getting the fire started. Not easy at all though.

Ray Mears makes it all look so simple...... :-\

Once lighted, it got going nicely:

(Image removed from quote.)

All assembled and heating up my soup:

(Image removed from quote.)

The view from the lunch room:

(Image removed from quote.)

Lunch was great. I sat on a rock in the sun enjoying the quiet. Some ravens played overhead, a few chickadees worked the old branches in the tree above me. Of course I burnt my tongue on the hot noodles, but watching a fox run across the opposite hill made it all worthwhile.

The Huntsman's main blade and saw processed some wood. The scissors got used to open food packages. This is why I love the Huntsman: the combination of saw, scissors, and blade. Such useful tools when you are going out to lunch!  :tu:

A perfect day  :dd:

Seem to have misplaced it this evening. Hopefully I'll find it tommorow. Hook and scissor usage today. This photo was from when I packed up some SAKs to ship off on warranty, then informed by a clueless postal worker at a post office I rarely go in that I can't ship a knife in the mail. Bullsmurf! I've shipped (and had the clerk pack) knives at the two other post offices around here all the time without issue, including a quite tactical looking Gerber EZ OUT Skeleton.

Hope you've got the mail sorted with him  ::)

Day 14 :

You are one lucky bunny Nix on so many levels.

Ne'er a truer word, my friend.  :tu:

Today I had occasion to be at the air base. There is a small air museum with a number of fine and unusual planes on display. I was particularly drawn to this ol' B-25. The J-variant was used as a strafing-bomber. With eight (8!) .50 cal machine guns, I can imagine it could wreak some havoc.

Naturally the Huntsman had to photobomb the shot......

(Image removed from quote.)

It's truly humbling to stand in front of one of these small (yes, small) and frail planes and realize that some mighty brave men climbed up into these aircraft to resist the forces of tyranny.

(Image removed from quote.)

To those who flew, fought, and won.  :salute:

:o  those guns must have slowed it down quite a bit  :D

Moved some furniture, and some shelves and photos attached to the wall. Scissors opened my probiotic and some packages. Large blade cut up a box to make a shim level out my worn-out 40-year old desk (unlike the one this computer is on, which is heavy, solid cherry from the 1950s, this particular desk was a cheapo my dad had in grade school). Can opener turned several Phillips screws. Mini screwdriver repaired the display cube for a model car. Hook helped me zip up my parka, by grabbing the bottom zipper so that I could pull the regular zipper up.

(Image removed from quote.)

Great job from the Huntsman and it's use  :tu:

Day 16.

Almost forgot about that challenge. Nothing special today, killed some oranges and apples today, no pics though, so a quick and dirty one has to do the job.
Chilled the evening, with beverages from yesterdays package.
Daughter is ill, so outdoortime will be limited the next day.

Day 16 :

A cold and stormy day today. We've had freezing rain, graupel, and snow, on and off, throughout the day. As a result, the roads are becoming iced-up and treacherous.

Seemed like a good day to stay in and enjoy some coffee and Jaffa cakes. But......we were mysteriously out of Jaffa cakes.....

So, Mrs Nix put in a request for some Espresso-chocolate chip cookies. The Huntsman helped liberate the tasty chips....

The results were undoubtedly better because of the Huntsman's assistance. Mrs Nix declared them "The best smurfin' cookies I've had all day". [And, yes, she used the word 'smurfin' ]
